Unlike many Video Vanguard winners\u2014like <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/mtv-vmas-2024-watch-katy-perry-perform-a-10-song-medley-and-accept-video-vanguard-award\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Katy Perry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/vmas-2023-watch-shakiras-video-vanguard-award-performance-and-speech\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shakira<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/watch-nicki-minaj-perform-career-spanning-video-vanguard-medley-at-vmas-2022\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nicki Minaj<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/mtv-vmas-2019-watch-missy-elliott-accept-the-video-vanguard-award\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Missy Elliott<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/mtv-vmas-2018-watch-jennifer-lopez-perform-a-medley-of-hits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Lopez<\/a>, P!nk, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/67842-mtv-vma-2016-watch-rihannas-video-vanguard-speech-drakes-introduction\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rihanna<\/a>\u2014Carey has never actually won a VMA, despite numerous nominations. She\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/mtv-vmas-2025-nominees-announced-see-the-full-list-here\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nominated<\/a> this year, too, in the Best R&amp;B category, for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/listen-to-mariah-carey-new-song-type-dangerous\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Type Dangerous<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards take place on Sunday, September 7, at Long Island\u2019s UBS Arena\u2014a fitting venue for the coronation of Huntington, New York, native Mariah Carey. The show is being hosted by another native Long Islander, Bay Shore\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/10584-ll-cool-j\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LL Cool J<\/a>\u2014a fitting host because Carey <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230902052909\/https:\/\/www.courant.com\/1997\/09\/06\/mtv-video-music-awards-a-lifeless-affair\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">presented<\/a> the Video Vanguard Award to him in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Carey will release the new album <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/mariah-carey-announces-new-album-here-for-it-all\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Here for It All<\/a> on September 26.
