{"id":858151,"date":"2026-08-17T06:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T06:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/858151\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T06:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T06:28:11","slug":"coles-and-woolworths-test-facial-recognition-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/858151\/","title":{"rendered":"Coles and Woolworths test facial recognition technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Coles and Woolworths have conducted tests of facial recognition technology, but it is unclear if either supermarket will be implementing it in stores.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It comes after <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/companies\/retail\/coles-woolworths-trial-facial-recognition-tech-amid-retail-crime-wave-20260813-p60nyi\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the Australia Financial Review reported<\/a> both Coles and Woolworths had trialled the technology as part of an ongoing effort to combat retail crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The article said both supermarket giants had &#8220;conducted early testing&#8221; of the technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When the ABC asked Coles about the potential of it being rolled out in stores, a spokesperson made a distinction between the use of the term &#8220;test&#8221; instead of &#8220;trial&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Coles has not done a trial using this technology,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A small, one-off, controlled proof-of-concept test of the technology was undertaken which did not use customer or team member information or data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;No decision has been made about the deployment of facial recognition technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A person wheels their trolley past the end of a supermarket aisle.
