Introduction<\/p>\n

If you watch much professional golf, you\u2019ve no doubt seen a Tour pro use a club in an unconventional way: intentionally blading a wedge or swinging a club from the wrong side of the ball.\u00a0 It was a shot like that \u2013 rolling a ball with the toe of a traditional blade putter [see it HERE<\/a>] \u2013 which inspired Incred Golf and their Reverse Face Balanced (RFB) designs.\u00a0 Claiming to be \u201c500% more forgiving\u201d than traditional putters, I knew I had to try them.\u00a0 I put the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter through the paces on the course and in my putting lab to see if it could deliver on its substantial promises.<\/p>\n

Looks<\/p>\n

While there are echos of the popular Fang shape in the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter, no one could credibly call this a clone or even an homage \u2013 the RFB SK1 is its own thing.\u00a0 At address, my attention gets pulled back and forth between the \u201cU\u201d shape of the head and the unique shaft insertion point.\u00a0 The cylinder that extends out of the back of the face is, to my eye, unusual but not unpleasant.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a refined, traditional design, but it visually emphasizes the technology at the heart of Incred\u2019s putters.<\/p>\n

In the bag, you can see several pieces of straightforward branding on the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter.\u00a0 The sole has the brand and model name, as well as \u201cReverse Face Balanced\u201d engraved in it.\u00a0 On the face, there are etching of the Incred \u201cI\u201d logo and an image of a putter face on.<\/p>\n

For players who opt for the Bespoke level of putter, Incred Golf offers a lot of visual customization.\u00a0 The putter shown here has a stainless steel face, and a copper face is offered at the Premium level.\u00a0 Bespoke opens up \u201cexotic face materials\u201d as well as laser engraving, sight line options, paint colors, and face grooves. \nSound & Feel<\/p>\n

I got to test the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter with two different face materials: copper and steel.\u00a0 To my surprise, the copper was much louder.\u00a0 I\u2019ve owned a couple copper putters in the past, and I loved them for their soft feel and sound.\u00a0 The copper faced RFB SK1 does feel very soft, but the sound is a metal \u201ctonk.\u201d\u00a0 What makes this even more unusual is that it\u2019s very quiet.\u00a0 The sound is rather hard-edged, but it\u2019s hushed unless you\u2019re hitting a very long putt.<\/p>\n

The steel faced RFB SK1 has a slightly firmer feel than the copper, but I would rate it as medium overall.\u00a0 Despite feeling firmer, the sound is duller, more of a conventional \u201cthud.\u201d<\/p>\n

What both putters have in common is moderate feedback through the hands.\u00a0 I could distinguish pure strikes from mishits, but I had to pay careful attention to discern exactly where the ball struck the face.\u00a0 The audio feedback is rather muddled.\u00a0 I had a hard time connecting the quality of the strike with a specific sound.<\/p>\n

Performance<\/p>\n

In over fifteen years of reviewing golf equipment, I\u2019ve tested a lot putters.\u00a0 The Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter is one of a very small group \u2013 maybe the only one \u2013 that explicitly tells you to use it differently than every other putter.\u00a0 Incred Golf calls it the \u201c5-Putt Adjustment.\u201d\u00a0 They ask you to put the ball in the center of your stance, \u201ctake the putter back on the lean of the shaft and let it swing through naturally.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re meant to hit the ball at the bottom of your arc or with a descending blow.\u00a0 \u00a0They say that after three to five putts, \u201cthe natural pendulum motion clicks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why does the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter ask for a different technique?\u00a0 Let\u2019s go back to the moment of inspiration \u2013 the blade putter being swung to hit the ball off the toe.\u00a0 This technique puts the putter\u2019s center of gravity in front of the shaft.\u00a0 Most putters have their CG behind (sometimes well behind) the shaft.\u00a0 Zero torque putters put the CG in line with the shaft.\u00a0 Incred Golf puts the CG of their putters in front of the shaft \u2013 a technology that has earned them four patents.\u00a0 That unique CG placement \u2013 according to the maker \u2013 necessitates a different technique.<\/p>\n

Those of you who have been reading my work for a while know that I frequently start my testing without \u201creading the instructions.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019d like to say that\u2019s because I\u2019m testing in a way that\u2019s authentic to most golfers, but really it\u2019s because I get excited and and impatient.\u00a0 Regardless, I took the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter to the putting green without knowing about their recommended technique and starting putting like normal.<\/p>\n

The initial results were outstanding.\u00a0 Not since my first experience with LAB Golf putters have I made so many 15-20 footers.\u00a0 Every putt seemed like it had a chance to go in, plenty looked over the edge, and way more than normal ended up in the bottom of the cup.\u00a0 Swinging the RFB SK1 felt natural and easy.<\/p>\n

\"Incred<\/p>\n

The next step in my testing was getting the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter on my launch monitor.\u00a0 There, I tested it in two different ways: with my normal stroke (ball positioned forward, neutral to slightly ascending strike) and with Incred Golf\u2019s suggested technique.\u00a0 Comparing it to my library of putting data, the RFB SK1 was impressive.\u00a0 With regard to ball speed consistency, the RFB SK1 was on par with the best mallets in the game [we tested the best zero torque mallet HERE<\/a>].<\/p>\n

Turning to skid and true roll, the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter was in the top half of putters I\u2019ve tested for skid distance (meaning less skidding), and it produced some of the best \u201ctop spin at launch\u201d numbers I\u2019ve seen.\u00a0 Interestingly, on those two metrics, the numbers were better with my normal technique, though that could be solely related to my comfort.\u00a0 Generally speaking, I don\u2019t subscribe to there being a single, universal \u201cbest\u201d technique.<\/p>\n

Finally, I took the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter to the course.\u00a0 Starting with the bad news, I didn\u2019t feel a good sense of connection with the putter, and that led to very poor distance control.\u00a0 This can all be reasonably explained away \u2013 trying to use a new technique without much practice time \u2013 but that didn\u2019t make it any more fun to have eight feet left for par.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the start lines and forgiveness were tremendous.\u00a0 Despite not feeling fully in control of the Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter, virtually every putt went where I was looking\u2026regardless of how I struck it.\u00a0 During each round, I had at least one made putt what was hit substantially off center.\u00a0 This left me thinking, \u201cIf I can get these results without much practice, how good could this be if I put in some work?\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re interested in gaming an Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter, there are a huge array of options.\u00a0 In addition to the different face materials, it can be built at lengths from 27 to 52 inches.\u00a0 They offer standard, counter balanced, arm lock, and broomstick configurations with lie angles ranging from 67 to 80 degrees.\u00a0 There are also several shaft and grip options. Conclusion<\/p>\n

Is reverse face balanced the next great evolution in putting?\u00a0 At a bare minimum, it\u2019s an interesting approach that has the potential for real performance gains.\u00a0 The\u00a0Incred Golf RFB SK1 putter \u2013 the true originator in this space \u2013 has outstanding forgiveness and the ability to start every putt on its intended line.\u00a0 If you want to try something totally new on the green, it\u2019s worth a look.
