<\/p>\nBroncos coach Michael Maguire says he knows what has gone wrong during a disastrous 2026 campaign compounded by a 40-6 loss to the Warriors – but wants to \u201ckeep that between us\u201d.<\/p>\n
Now The Australian\u2019s Brent Read has questioned why Maguire hasn\u2019t \u201cfixed\u201d his side\u2019s issues, with Brisbane mathematically in the running to win the wooden spoon.<\/p>\n
The Broncos have slumped from premiership winners last season to 16th, having suffered the 15th loss of a disastrous campaign in Round 24.<\/p>\n

Join now and get your first month for just $1<\/a>.<\/p>\n And according to Read, their issues all stem back to the unrest within the playing group that has consistently been rumoured during Maguire\u2019s tenure. <\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think he does know what it is, otherwise he would have fixed it. I don\u2019t think he can fix it, not while the season is going on,\u201d Read said on NRL360 on Monday night.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve said it before this is a huge off-season… he\u2019s got to fix some relationships. They aren\u2019t playing like a happy team are they? They haven\u2019t played like a happy team since the premiership.<\/p>\n \u201cClearly it was some of the players (whose relationships were strained). We\u2019ve all heard them, that there\u2019s players that aren\u2019t overly happy with the environment around the footy club.<\/p>\n \u201cEver since Payne (Haas) walked out, ever since Ben Te\u2019o walked out on the joint.\u201d<\/p>\n During their turbulent run, the Broncos revealed they would be completing an end-of-season review to get to the bottom of the club\u2019s issues.<\/p>\n However, The Courier Mail <\/a>reported Brisbane were also set for a roster clear-out, with recruitment-and-pathways chief Simon Scanlan shifting into a new role.<\/p>\n Corey Jensen was forced to retire while the likes of Payne Haas, Grant Anderson, Jesse Arthars, Gehamat Shibasaki and Ben Te Kura are all set to or have already left.<\/p>\n A host of other players are also without contracts for 2027, including star halfback Adam Reynolds who is set to hang up the boots at the season\u2019s end.<\/p>\n Get all the latest NRL news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. It\u2019s too hard to gut a dressing room, particularly when you have guys on big money.<\/p>\n \u201cSome of their most significant senior players are the ones who look the most unhappy and the most distant when they are on that footy field.<\/p>\n \u201cA, it\u2019s hard to get rid of those guys and B, I don\u2019t think you want to get rid of those guys. They are the guys who are the heartbeat of your footy team.\u201d<\/p>\n While the decision to restructure their recruitment team suggests the club believe their roster was the reason behind the ugly slump, Read wasn\u2019t buying it.<\/p>\n \u201cThe argument is ridiculous, that roster won a comp last year, to point their finger at the roster is insanity and it\u2019s a diversion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cTo take away from the real issues, which the real issues aren\u2019t the roster.
