We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>A temporary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/us\/money\/social-security-cola-2027-increase-b3028080.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Social Security<\/a> tax cut meant to provide relief to retirees is likely to cause long-term harm, according to a recent analysis by Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p>Amid growing concern over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/us\/money\/social-security-benefits-increase-2027-b3014826.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Social Security payments<\/a> falling by as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/us\/money\/social-security-benefits-cuts-funds-b3001425.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">22 percent<\/a> when a key funding source runs dry in 2032, the tax cut, which is included in Donald Trump\u2019s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-affiliate=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=44681X1458326&amp;xcust=b3034487&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Ffinance.yahoo.com%2Feconomy%2Fpolicy%2Farticles%2Fno-tax-social-security-facts-134500415.html&amp;sref=\/us\/money\/social-security-tax-retirement-trump-b3034487.html\"> is on track to contribute to the system\u2019s shortage<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The tax deduction it provides on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/us\/money\/social-security-spouse-payment-changes-repeal-b3000614.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Social Security income<\/a> from 2025 to 2028 would cost an estimated $91 billion in tax revenue for the system, according to financial think tank Peter G. Peterson Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolicymakers adopted a broader approach in the form of a new senior deduction that is projected to cost $90.8 billion over four years, contributing to OBBBA\u2019s total deficit increase of $4.1 trillion over ten years, including interest costs,\u201d financial think tank Peter G Peterson Foundation wrote in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pgpf.org\/article\/understanding-the-new-senior-deduction-in-the-one-big-beautiful-bill-act\/\">January analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The deduction &#8211; which reduces a retiree\u2019s taxable income &#8211; is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/new-and-enhanced-deductions-for-individuals\">$6,000 for single filers<\/a> age 65 and older, and $12,000 for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/us\/money\/social-security-spouse-payment-changes-b2961346.html\">married couples aged 65 and older<\/a>, according to the IRS.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-2225655723.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Tax cuts meant to save Social Security recipients money from 2025 to 2028 could end up adding to a revenue shortfall that\u2019s on pace to lower Social Security payments by up to 22 percent in 2032\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Tax cuts meant to save Social Security recipients money from 2025 to 2028 could end up adding to a revenue shortfall that\u2019s on pace to lower Social Security payments by up to 22 percent in 2032 (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>While the tax cut benefits retirees for the four years in which they can claim it, reduced tax payments add nearly $100 billion to a payment system struggling to maintain funding. <\/p>\n<p>The Social Security system relies on income from three places to pay out benefits to retirees and their spouses: payroll taxes, two trust funds and taxes on Social Security payments<\/p>\n<p>Taxes on payroll and Social Security payments flow into two trust funds &#8211;
