What in previous seasons had been a game of marginal gains is now about massive, title-changing steps that are constantly altering our understanding of the competitive landscape.

Mercedes started the season with the fastest car, but its position at the top has become increasingly precarious. Other teams have won three of the last five grands prix, with Ferrari stepping up as its closest rival.

Fox Sports, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every practice, qualifying session and race in the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship™ LIVE in 4K. New to Kayo? The further down you stand, the greater your allocation.

For roughly the first six months of the year — up to the week between the Barcelona-Catalunya and Austrian grands prix — the restrictions were based on last year’s championship finishing order.

Wind tunnel restrictions to 21 June

1. McLaren: 224 wind tunnel runs, 1400 CFD hours

2. Mercedes: 240 wind tunnel runs, 1500 CFD hours

3. Red Bull Racing: 256 wind tunnel runs, 1600 CFD hours

4. Ferrari: 272 wind tunnel runs, 1700 CFD hours

This puts McLaren’s struggles with these regulations into some context, even most of the development for this year’s car was done last season — though McLaren led the constructors championship throughout 2025.

On 22 June, however, these numbers were reset based on the title table, leading to some considerable swings.

Wind tunnel restrictions for the rest of the season, percentage change

1. Mercedes: reduction of 7.1 per cent

2. Ferrari: reduction of 13.3 per cent

3. McLaren: increase of 14.3 per cent

4. Red Bull Racing: increase of 6.3 per cent

Ferrari has lost the most development time, while McLaren has gained the most. Mercedes and Red Bull Racing have had comparatively smaller shuffles.

The numbers look small, but every minute in the wind tunnel is counting for huge amounts of time so early in the new rules era.

“Aerodynamically, the gain rate for each passing week in the wind tunnel, the amount of lap time we find — that’s the gain rate — is about six to seven times what it was last year,” Mercedes technical director James Allison told the Mercedes Silver Arrows Radio Show podcast.

“It’s about half a second every two months … that’s really, really steep.”

These changes will not be evident immediately and will be most important in setting out next year’s cars.

But if the upgrade race pushes deep into this season — and several teams are suggesting that it will — these numbers could make the difference in deciding the title.

Who’s to blame over Brown car fiasco? | 01:24

IS MERCEDES VULNERABLE?

There’s no doubt Mercedes’s grip on the sport isn’t as tight as it looked early in the year.

Gap to fastest, last five rounds

1. Mercedes: +0.054 seconds

2. Ferrari: +0.204 seconds

3. McLaren: +0.356 seconds

4. Red Bull Racing: +0.425 seconds

Choosing a sample size this season has been difficult, with big upgrades changing the picture dramatically from one week to the next.

Ferrari’s big Barcelona upgrade has hauled it into the mix, while McLaren’s Hungary upgrade saw Lando Norris dominate in Budapest, as just two examples.

Mercedes, meanwhile, hasn’t had a sizeable upgrade since May’s Canadian Grand Prix, putting it out of sync with the rest.

Team boss Toto Wolff made headlines earlier in the year when he claimed Ferrari would have to run out of budget cap soon to justify how quickly it was bringing new parts to the car, triggering a fiery denial from Maranello counterpart Fred Vasseur.

But Mercedes has since revealed more about its own development approach that dispels the idea that it’s been keeping its power dry and could blow everyone away in the second half of the campaign.

“We did everything in our power to launch a car at the start of the year that was going to be strong,” Allison continued.

“We took a decision internally on the aerodynamic side and on the bodywork side of the car that we were going to leave it later than we’ve ever left a car before — by several weeks — and that we were going to do a plan that had less than no contingency in it.

“As a result of that plan, we got as much of that steep development slope in the first [version of the] car at the first race as I think was humanly possible to get in there. We emptied everything out to do that.

“Other teams … fixed their [launch] car earlier in time. They then were developing the first upgrade to arrive sooner in the season.

“We arrived bristling with performance but with all of it spent.”

It suggests the competitive order established recently is more reflective of the true form guide, with other teams having effectively caught up on Mercedes’s early, pre-season car development.

But deputy technical director Simone Resta warned just before the mid-season break that Mercedes would “try to focus on having something more sizeable on the car” for after the shutdown that he said would bring “another step to the car”.

How big a step this is could decide how easy a ride the constructors title leader has to the finish — and how much drivers championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli has to sweat on his way there.

Raul Fernandez dominates British MotoGP | 00:39

FERRARI’S HOPES HANG ON THE ENGINE

Ferrari principal Vasseur has been the loudest in proclaiming that the team that develops best, not the team that starts strongest, would win the championship.

It was easy for him to say when Ferrari got a poor start relative to Mercedes, but he’s been making good on that promise, with a strong upgrade schedule taking his team to victory in two of the last five races.

Mercedes’s unreliability — or Ferrari’s super reliability, depending on which way you look at it — has been enough to keep the Italian team and at least Lewis Hamilton in the mix for both titles long enough for the competitive gap to close, putting both championships in dispute.

Development rate relative to fastest, season so far

1. Red Bull Racing: improved by 0.660 seconds

2. Ferrari: improved by 0.592 seconds

3. McLaren: improved by 0.347 seconds

4. Mercedes: degraded by 0.141 seconds

Vasseur’s answer to the budget cap question was that it was easy to over-estimate the cost of what he says has been a lot of tweaking to the car’s aerodynamic platform rather than significant revolutions of its fundamental design.

He’s also said the team intends to keep upgrading this year’s car for as long as possible, his belief in a 2026 title challenge apparently absolute.

Ferrari’s quest to overhaul Mercedes may have received a boost from an agreement with the FIA to offer a small budget cap concession to all teams designed to pay for a new chassis for 2027 and 2028, when fuel tank size will need to grow to accommodate changes to the engine rules.

According to The Race, there are some rules on when all the additional money can be spent, but it’s doesn’t have to be spent on a new chassis.

Ferrari might be tempted to use the extra funds for a final 2026 push.

But then again, Ferrari already has what several teams believe is the best aerodynamic package. Its real weakness is engine performance, which exists in a completely different realm of regulations.

Ferrari received two upgrade concessions earlier this year based on the performance of its internal combustion engine being 4 per cent or more slower than the benchmark Red Bull Powertrains petrol motor.

It spent one of them for an upgrade in Austria, but its second upgrade, developed over more time, is tipped to be a bigger step thanks to changes to the combustion and turbocharger elements.

It’s expected to get its first run at the Italian Grand Prix in early September, just over two weeks from now.

Monza, and extreme test of engine performance, will illuminate whether Ferrari really can push Mercedes all the way.

Bezzecchi Smashes British Lap Record | 01:00

McLAREN IN TITLE-DEFINING PHASE

McLaren spent most of the first half of the season drifting backwards until its upgrade in Hungary dramatically changed the game, propelling Norris to a dominant victory that could have been a one-two finish were it not for Oscar Piastri’s gearbox failure.

The upgrade was the culmination of work to undo pre-season design decisions the team came to recognise as wrong as the year progressed. It cost the team several months in development time, but it believes it’s now on the right track.

Buoyed by the victory, which appeared to validate its development tools are working as well as they were last season, McLaren boss Andrea Stella says his team will continue pushing in pursuit of more wins and the championship.

“My impression is that to stay consistently in this position [at the front] we will have to keep upgrading the car and we will have to add probably another half a second to the car from now to the end of the season,” he said, per The Race.

“This is our objective, honestly, because we don’t want to give up on this season.”

Constructors championship standings after 11 rounds

1. Mercedes: 379 points

2. Ferrari: 307 points

3. McLaren: 220 points

4. Red Bull Racing: 177 points

There’s more to come from the team’s Hungary-spec upgrades too, with subsequent parts of the package due at the races after the break as the team completes its course correction.

“If we can continue the season as we did in Budapest, I think we can still achieve a great deal,” Stella said.

“The [championship] result will depend on how effective the solutions we bring to the track prove to be.

“In the first part of the season, we struggled more than we expected in this regard too, but I believe that in recent years, once we’ve gained some momentum, we’ve been able to maintain it.

“There are still 12 races left on the calendar, so there are plenty of opportunities given that 546 points are up for grabs.

“Of course the gap in both championships is significant, but we remember last year’s lesson well. After all, I always tell the team that if we’ve set up a new display cabinet to house the new, recent trophies at the McLaren Technology Centre, then we have a duty to do our utmost to keep filling it.”

Payne overcomes damage to beat Broc | 02:17

RED BULL RACING CONTEMPLATING 2027 SWITCH

As noted above, Red Bull Racing has made up the most ground of any frontrunner this season through development. It’s easy to forget how far off the pace the team was in the early rounds of the year.

That slow start was partly thanks to the team developing the 2025 car late into last season rather than switching focus to 2026. Part of that was a bid to defend Max Verstappen’s drivers championship, but it was also to troubleshoot its development tools after coming so dramatically off the boil in recent years.

Turning that slow start around appears to have taken more resource than any other frontrunning team has spent so far — at least according to team boss Laurent Mekies’s relatively conservative outlook before the break.

“At some stage we’ll need to make a call on the balance between this year and next year,” he said, per Crash.

“I expect that to happen earlier than we did last year, especially as the regulations are what they are.

“We have brought a huge amount of development to the car between race 1 and [Hungary] in order to try to correct as soon as possible the large deficit we had initially.

“It’s probably difficult to imagine that we will continue at that rhythm.”

MORE FORMULA 1

DOMINANCE RANKING: The teammate beltings that could change the F1 silly season

DRIVER RANKINGS: Where Piastri sits as new reality sinks in

REPORT CARD: Humiliating moment exposes true biggest flop; Piastri puzzle

WINNERS AND LOSERS: Painful Piastri truth as young gun breaks Ricciardo curse; debt Max must pay

With more wind tunnel time than any of the other frontrunners — and it’s sure to stay that way at the end of the season too — Red Bull Racing appears poised to make the trade-off it refused to contemplate in 2025 and switch focus early to next season.

It’s easy to understand given how far adrift it (202 points) and Verstappen (110 points) are off their respectively title leads.

But it’s also critical. Verstappen has been angling for an exit this year, but it seems likely that he’ll be forced to accept another season at Red Bull Racing given the lack of alternatives available.

That gives the team one more roll of the dice to prove itself to the Dutchman.

The development race for the 2026 title is on, but Red Bull Racing could fire the starting gun on 2027 early.

The car that will win this year’s Formula 1 world championship is yet to reveal itself.
