Scottie Scheffler arrives at the BMW Championship with history firmly in his sights after blowing away the field at the FedEx St. Jude Championship by a whopping eight shots.<\/p>\n
The world No.1 produced rounds of 68, 61, 68 and 66 on his way to victory, with his stunning second-round 61 tying the course record and helping strengthen his grip on top spot heading into this week\u2019s second FedExCup Playoffs event.<\/p>\n
It was Scheffler\u2019s second victory of the season, but that number hardly tells the full story of another remarkably consistent campaign.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old has recorded 10 top-five finishes, including five runner-up results, and his latest triumph took his career tally to 21 PGA Tour victories.<\/p>\n
His dominance drew huge praise from 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman.<\/p>\n
\u201cI put this guy up with any of the greatest athletes of this time,\u201d Immelman said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is just a dominant force week in and week out.\u201d<\/p>\n
And the numbers underline exactly why.<\/p>\n
Scheffler became the third-youngest player in PGA Tour history to reach 21 victories, behind only Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.<\/p>\n
Even compared to his current peers, Scheffler is operating on another level.<\/p>\n
All 21 of his victories have come since the beginning of 2022. Rory McIlroy has the next most during that period with 10, while only one other player has reached six.<\/p>\n
Scheffler also became just the 36th player in PGA Tour history to reach 21 career victories, with his latest success delivering another US$3.6 million (A$5m) payday.<\/p>\n
That cheque also took him past McIlroy into second on the PGA Tour\u2019s all-time career earnings list \u2013 and within touching distance of another piece of Tiger Woods history.<\/p>\n
Woods sits atop the list with more than US$121 million in career earnings, while Scheffler has now surged beyond US$120 million.<\/p>\n
It means another monster week at the BMW Championship could see the 30-year-old leapfrog Woods and take top spot despite still being in the prime of his career.<\/p>\n
But for all the records and extraordinary numbers, Scheffler admitted there had been some frustration in repeatedly putting himself in contention this season without converting more opportunities into victories.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think when you\u2019re close \u2013 it\u2019s not easy to win out here. I felt like this year, the year that I\u2019ve had kind of shows that, how difficult it is,\u201d Scheffler said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a lot of talented guys, and I played some really solid golf over the course of this year, but I hadn\u2019t played much kind of great golf.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike I said, I had my close calls and lost a couple playoffs.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo it was nice coming into a day in which I had the lead and able to hold that lead and really kind of build on it as the round went on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like a week like this was coming. I felt like I was on repeat all year just being like, hey, I\u2019m playing solid. I\u2019m close.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels good to be answering some different questions at the end of this week.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those questions could change again very quickly.<\/p>\n
Scheffler now heads to Bellerive Country Club as the man everyone is chasing at this week\u2019s BMW Championship, where another US$20 million purse is on offer and the world No.1 has another opportunity to add to an already historic run.<\/p>\n
After what he produced last weekend, the biggest question is becoming increasingly familiar: who can stop him?<\/p>\n
AUSSIE DUO IN $56M FIGHT FOR TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP SPOT<\/p>\n
Australia\u2019s hopes of reaching the season-ending TOUR Championship now rest with Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott as the FedExCup Playoffs reach crunch time.<\/p>\n
Only 50 players remain heading into this week\u2019s BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club, and by Sunday night that number will be slashed to 30.<\/p>\n
Those who survive will advance to the TOUR Championship and earn a shot at a whopping US$40 million (A$56m) purse, leaving plenty on the line for the Australian duo.<\/p>\n

Lee enters the week ranked 18th and with some valuable breathing room inside the top 30, while Scott sits 27th and much closer to the danger zone.<\/p>\n
For the 46-year-old veteran, there will be little room for error.<\/p>\n
Scott was comfortably the best-performing Australian at last weekend\u2019s FedEx St. Jude Championship, finishing five-under and tied for 12th after rounds of 66, 70, 69 and 70.<\/p>\n
The result ensured his season would continue into the second week of the FedExCup Playoffs and, importantly, left him in position to advance all the way to the TOUR Championship.<\/p>\n
Scott also pocketed US$368,571 for his top-15 finish, but the bigger reward was keeping his season alive.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt sets me up for what can be a year on my terms, which will be nice,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n
It was a vastly different weekend for Lee.<\/p>\n
The 28-year-old began strongly with a three-under 67 but was unable to build on it, following with rounds of 71, 75 and 71 to finish tied for 55th.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for Lee, his strong season means he enters the BMW Championship with some breathing room at No.18, although another difficult weekend could still leave him vulnerable.<\/p>\n
Scott\u2019s position is considerably more precarious.<\/p>\n
Sitting 27th, the former Masters champion is just three places inside the qualification mark and will need another strong showing to keep his season alive.<\/p>\n
There is no cut at the BMW Championship, giving both Australians four rounds to secure their places among the final 30.<\/p>\n
For Lee, it is about protecting the position he has built. For Scott, the fight could go all the way to Sunday.<\/p>\n
RORY SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS AFTER WEEKEND SLUMP<\/p>\n
While Scottie Scheffler arrives at Bellerive in blistering form, world No.2 Rory McIlroy finds himself searching for answers after a weekend to forget at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.<\/p>\n
McIlroy enters the BMW Championship sitting 13th in the standings and remains in a strong position to qualify for the season-ending TOUR Championship, but will be desperate to rediscover some form before the field is cut from 50 to 30.<\/p>\n

The Northern Irishman finished a disappointing 66th last weekend after rounds of 74, 70, 72 and 72, failing to break par across any of his four rounds.<\/p>\n
It was a particularly frustrating return for McIlroy, who conceded a lack of preparation heading into the tournament had left him struggling to find any rhythm with his swing.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously didn\u2019t come in here with a ton of reps, almost felt like the more the week went on, the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit,\u201d McIlroy said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI figured it out a little bit the last few holes today, I think.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, swing wasn\u2019t in sync and obviously didn\u2019t do a ton of practice coming in here.<\/p>\n
\u201cI guess nice to shake the rust off a little bit, but I\u2019m going to have to work pretty hard between now and next Thursday to feel like I have any sort of golf game to compete next week (at the BMW).\u201d<\/p>\n

McIlroy\u2019s position at No.13 means one poor tournament has not left his TOUR Championship hopes in immediate danger, but the performance was far from ideal at the business end of the season.<\/p>\n
It also provided a stark contrast to Scheffler, with the world No.1 storming to an eight-shot victory while his closest rival in the world rankings struggled to make an impact.<\/p>\n
McIlroy now has only a matter of days to find the answers he was searching for in Memphis before another elite 50-man field tees it up at Bellerive.<\/p>\n
