Ask them to open a bank card and it can take weeks, if it happens at all. That gap explains a lot about where the country’s digital economy is heading.

Mobile wallets have gone from a niche tool to the way millions of Egyptians pay by default. By the National Telecom Regulatory Authority’s count, about half the adult population used e-wallets in 2025, up from roughly 20% in 2020, with transaction volumes rising sharply.

The reasons are practical. Many Egyptian adults have never held a bank account, put off by income rules and card fees. A wallet needs only a SIM and a national ID, and it works in minutes. Vodafone Cash still leads, while InstaPay, the central bank’s transfer network, has changed how people load money. Most top-ups now arrive by instant bank transfer, much of it after hours and on weekends.

That shift has reset expectations everywhere people spend online. Users want to tap, confirm in their wallet app, and get back in seconds. Platforms that skip local payment methods leave money on the table, and a two- or three-minute delay at checkout is enough to lose them.

The team at gaming platform AVAbet points to one stubborn problem: keeping payment gateways steady when everyone pays at once. During Egypt’s first-ever run to the World Cup Round of 16 in 2026, simultaneous transactions spiked many times over. If a payment doesn’t clear in a few seconds, the user is gone.

By the platform’s own numbers, charging directly in Egyptian pounds drops declined-transaction rates from about 35% on cards to low single digits, with withdrawals to Vodafone Cash or InstaPay clearing in minutes. AVAbet runs on an official Anjouan licence, with the interface fully in Arabic. It also offers an official mobile app and responsible gaming tools.

With Vision 2030 pushing hard to cut cash use, the direction is set. The wallets, and the platforms built around them, are going to get busier.

Ask an Egyptian to top up a wallet with 200 pounds and it takes a minute.
