(ABC Broken Hill: Kristina Rosengren)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve come across people who have had rentals, who had homes, and their rent has gone up to a point where they can&#8217;t afford to live there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They can&#8217;t afford to rent anywhere, and they&#8217;re sleeping rough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was this crisis that gave him the idea to take his barbecue event on the road, to share meals with those experiencing hardship across Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I figured if this is what&#8217;s happening in Adelaide, it must be happening everywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With his family in tow, they devised a plan to deliver warm feeds to 18 locations across South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A tray of smoked, juicy meat being shredded by hand \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7a7060379faafd4046f2fc0440217327.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dave Meadows&#8217; barbecue meals take six to eight hours to slow cook. (ABC Broken Hill: Kristina Rosengren\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We just really wanted to inspire people in their local town to hold up their hand and help out,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Something that we&#8217;ve found is these charities that we are partnered with are always looking for help.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After 59 days on the road, the family returned to Adelaide in mid-August after serving around 1,350 meals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The unspent $10,552 they raised will be donated back to the charities they partnered with along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What we&#8217;re doing is sharing hope and happiness and showing people who are doing it tough out there that there are other people out there who care,&#8221; Mr Meadows said.<\/p>\n<p>More news from Broken Hill<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rosslynne Crawford is sleeping under &#8220;the peppercorn tree&#8221;, as she likes to call it.
