The trade kicker in his contract acts as a built-in insurance policy for Harden. If Cleveland ever trades him, his salary immediately jumps by 15%, with the new team forced to pay the difference.<\/p>\n

With Harden earning an average of $32.33 million per year under the new $97 million deal, a trade would immediately trigger a massive $4.85 million annual raise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That bumps his total contract value up to $111.55 million, making him significantly more expensive and harder to move. While everyone is focused on the $97 million headline, this specific clause is what actually controls Harden’s future flexibility in Cleveland.<\/p>\n

Signing Harden to a long-term contract instead of a short-term deal shows Cleveland plans to build around him and Donovan Mitchell for the long haul. The trade kicker in his contract proves that.\u00a0<\/p>\n
