Credit: Supplied<\/p>\nThree young Freo girls started making music for a school project, now years later they\u2019re preparing to headline one of the port city\u2019s biggest arts festivals.<\/p>\n
As Fremantle\u2019s city-wide 10 Nights in Port returns this weekend, up and coming indie-pop band The Stamps will perform with four high school beginner bands at the Future Treasures live music event this Sunday.<\/p>\n
Scarlett Graham, Rubina Bertolini and Sofia Hourani met in school when they were just 15-years-old, and quickly realised their folky harmonies were something special.<\/p>\n
They began playing various gigs around Perth, while keeping a soft spot for their Fremantle roots, as they earned a reputation as one of Australia\u2019s most exciting young bands.<\/p>\n
The girls have just returned from their first international headline tour in Europe and are preparing to head off to Canada in October.<\/p>\n
Before then, they will headline Future Treasures at Fremantle\u2019s Victoria Hall, armed with songs from their first cover EP \u2018She Bangs The Drums\u2019 and 2025 album \u2018in all the ways i am\u2019, and some new music.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe haven\u2019t really decided (the setlist), but we have lots of new stuff in the works that are hopefully coming out this year, so it\u2019s mostly new stuff which is really exciting,\u201d 22-year-old Hourani said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur sound has changed quite a bit since being in high school, which is pretty normal, but we\u2019ve done a lot of development and there\u2019s a different incorporation of sounds, and it\u2019s a lot more fun than when we were in high school … it\u2019s nice to show a bit of a lighter side too,\u201d 23-year-old Graham added.<\/p>\n
The Future Treasures event is a concert that showcases the best and brightest young musicians from the local scene, with four bands hailing from local Fremantle schools getting the opportunity to perform live.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time The Stamps will take the stage at 10 Nights in Port, but it will be their first time headlining and guiding the younger bands.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a full circle moment because some of the younger bands that are playing this year are from our high school as well, so it feels pretty special to be giving them a platform,\u201d 22-year-old Bertolini said.<\/p>\n
Graham said she felt excited to be on the other side of the mentoring process, and being able to support other local young artists chasing their dreams.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were always being mentored, so it\u2019s nice to give back and share a little bit of knowledge,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re from Freo, so a lot of people that know us from Freo have known us for a long time, they\u2019ve seen us grow up. I\u2019m excited to show a little bit of a different side and showcase the development we\u2019ve had, especially to that audience because they\u2019ve been so loyal, and always supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n
