{"id":862634,"date":"2026-08-21T01:10:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T01:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/862634\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T01:10:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T01:10:25","slug":"union-organisers-removed-by-bhp-at-port-hedland-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/862634\/","title":{"rendered":"Union organisers removed by BHP at Port Hedland operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fresh tensions have erupted between unions and BHP during a visit by union officials to the miner&#8217;s Port Hedland operations on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Electrical Trades Union (ETU) claims three elected union representatives, two from the ETU and one from the Australian Workers&#8217; Union, were illegally removed from site during a right-of-entry visit for failing to comply with an order to sit down in a room that had no sitting space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">BHP accused the union reps of &#8220;aggressive behaviour&#8221; towards a female BHP employee who asked them to comply with the order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It comes amid an ongoing industrial dispute at the port, with the miner and unions locked in negotiations that have seen <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-08\/port-hedland-strike-importance-australia-largest-bulk-port\/106994084\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106994084\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strikes of varying severity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Differing accounts<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to the ETU, the organisers were preparing to address a meeting of workers when a manager instructed them to sit down in a room with &#8220;no surface on which to sit&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They were removed by security guards and met at the front of the terminal by police.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BHP's Port Hedland operations. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7c57372e952f460eac4500ddfac9f3a4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">BHP&#8217;s Port Hedland operations.\u00a0 (ABC News: Andrew Seabourne)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A BHP spokesperson said anyone entering BHP sites were required to comply with rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Aggressive behaviour is never tolerated in our workplaces,&#8221; a BHP spokesperson told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In the interests of maintaining a safe and respectful workplace, we have a responsibility to uphold standards of behaviour which are respectful of everyone on site.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">WA Police confirmed officers were called to a BHP facility on Thursday morning, but said they had no interactions with union members, had laid no charges and no investigations were pending.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Court threat<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The union said its officials were always &#8220;civil, peaceful and efficient&#8221; when visiting worksites and accused BHP of &#8220;a disgraceful smear against people who were illegally prevented from doing their job&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The decision of BHP management to use security guards to effect the removal of workers&#8217; elected representatives is a flagrant breach of the Fair Work Act, and of International Labor Organization conventions on freedom of association,&#8221; ETU WA state secretary Adam Woodage said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing black T-shirt has a flag pod on his left shoulder. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b5d12045fd4343af29cc790f14f5c6ee.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Adam Woodage, Electrical Trades Union state secretary in WA.
