{"id":862686,"date":"2026-08-21T02:04:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T02:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/862686\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T02:04:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T02:04:13","slug":"watkins-museum-foundation-to-bring-famous-painting-to-lawrence-exhibition-to-accompany-it-the-lawrence-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/862686\/","title":{"rendered":"Watkins Museum, foundation to bring famous painting to Lawrence; exhibition to accompany it \u2013 The Lawrence Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Share this post or save for later<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Watkins Museum of History is partnering with Art Bridges Foundation to bring a major 19th-century work of art to Lawrence, to be displayed in conjunction with a new series of exhibitions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWashington Passing the Delaware,\u201d by Edward Hicks, will be the centerpiece of the museum\u2019s new Sharing Heritage Through Art exhibition, which will open in the third-floor gallery in April 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHicks, the Pennsylvania Quaker preacher best known for his Peaceable Kingdom paintings, produced several versions of Washington\u2019s December 1776 crossing of the Delaware River, modeling them on Thomas Sully\u2019s The Passage of the Delaware (1819),\u201d according to a news release from the museum. \u201cThe oil on canvas on loan to the Watkins depicts the Continental Army\u2019s surprise advance on Trenton, New Jersey \u2014 a turning point of the Revolutionary War \u2014 and will remain on view through December 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition will surround the painting with a selection of artwork and stories drawn from the Watkins\u2019 collection and community partners that will rotate every two months. It will be open through December 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe series examines how cultural groups in the region, including Native American, African American and Mexican American communities, preserve and express their heritage through art,\u201d according to the release. \u201cThe opening installation will pair Hicks\u2019 depiction of an iconic episode from the American Revolution with traditional approaches to a defining event in Lawrence\u2019s own history, Quantrill\u2019s Raid of 1863.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steve Nowak, executive director of the museum, said the project provides a new perspective on local history. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrough the medium of art, visitors will discover how different cultural traditions represented in our community remember and share their heritage,\u201d he said in the release.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
