Current world championship leader Kimi Antonelli was a surprisingly low fifth in qualifying after setting the fastest timein practice in his Mercedes. <\/p>\n
Back for the first race after the tradional month-long summer break, Russell set a time of one minute and 11.567 seconds,0.041 seconds faster than Leclerc, ahead of what looks like being a knife-edge battle all weekend between the top teams. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe lap felt really good, to be honest. It all came together nicely,\u201d said Russell.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really happy to come back. It\u2019s been a little while since I\u2019ve done one of these interviews,\u201d added Russell, who wonthe first Grand Prix of the season but has since fallen off the pace. <\/p>\n

Piastri said after the final session that he could potentially have snatched pole with McLaren\u2019s upgrades showing immediate performance boosts.<\/p>\n
\u201cP4 today, a bittersweet result because we made positive progress from this morning and the pace was right there during Sprint Qualifying,\u201d Piastri told the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was so close at the top that with a cleaner lap I might have had pole.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are still plenty of positives to take away. Today is all good learning and we\u2019re improving every weekend which is crucial because we want to be firmly in the mix. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe performance is encouraging, and it shows we\u2019re moving in the right direction, but we know that it\u2019s going to be tight with Ferrari and Mercedes, and the difference will come down to the fine margins.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur job now is to tidy up those last little details and close the small gaps that still remain. If we execute well, we\u2019ll give ourselves a real shot in the remaining sessions throughout the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

After rain early in the morning, the track had dried out, but Antonelli appeared to have grip issues, spinning in the firstqualifying session. <\/p>\n

Earlier Friday, Antonelli had laid down the gauntlet to the other teams, turning in the fastest lap in testing conditionsat the only practice session. <\/p>\n
The Dutch Grand Prix, coming a month after the last race in Hungary, comes with every sign the championship could go downto the wire in the second half of the season. <\/p>\n
Antonelli, who turns 20 next week, has a 50-point advantage over seven-time world champion Hamilton, at 41 more than twice his age. <\/p>\n
Antonelli and Mercedes dominated the first half of the season, with the prodigy picking up wins in six of the 11 races, includingfive consecutive chequered flags. <\/p>\n
But the chasing pack have brought successful upgrades to their cars, with Mercedes admitting they are \u201cout of sync\u201d in termsof improvements to their own package. <\/p>\n
McLaren are hoping to build on their triumph at the last Grand Prix before the summer break, when Norris secured his first win of the season. <\/p>\n

The papaya outfit have strong form at Zandvoort, with Piastri winning in 2025 and Norris himself the year before. <\/p>\n
Ferrari have also shown signs they can compete at the front of the grid, with Hamilton declaring himself the fittest he hasever been after a summer break spent in the gym. <\/p>\n
Verstappen can never be counted out, fresh from the news that he has extended his contract with Red Bull until 2030.<\/p>\n
The hordes of Max fans will be hoping Verstappen can deliver on his promise to give them a \u201cspecial send-off\u201d at the lastGrand Prix to be staged at Zandvoort. <\/p>\n
The Dutch seaside resort will not be on the Formula One calendar from next year, after promoters pulled the plug.<\/p>\n
