While Key West is synonymous with Margaritaville-themed vibes, local bar and restaurant visionary Chris Shultz redefined the Key West night scene over a decade ago. Boldly bucking the trend of steel drums and Jimmy Buffett nostalgia, Shultz created a cult following with steampunk designs and \u201980s retro d\u00e9cor at his legendary bar, the Porch on Caroline Street. Soon after, other popular restaurants and bars would follow, featuring artistic approaches to small plates and craft cocktails.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, Shultz still commands his healthy share of the Key West night scene with bars such as Tiki House on Duval, General Horseplay bar and the adjoining upstairs cocktail lounge aptly named HiNote. And while Shultz has always challenged the norms of traditional Key West modus operandi, he has explored the limits of his stylistic vision, ranging from his d\u00e9cor to the eclectic individuals drawn into his orbit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This week Shultz will once again redefine his presence on the island by displaying three authenticated works by legendary street artist and activist Banksy, whose art remains among the most recognized in the world \u2014 although the English icon has never publicly been identified. The three rare prints that will be on display at HiNote, all authenticated and numbered, include Banksy\u2019s \u201cGirl with Balloon,\u201d \u201cBomb Hugger\u201d and \u201cLaugh Now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery night we will feature some surprise entertainment with some eccentric characters that reflect the artistic vibes of the art,\u201d said Shultz. \u201cI\u2019m stoked it has worked out and people get to see some of the most iconic works in the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shultz said the opportunity to feature the rare prints came about through the connection of friendship. His friend, Jon Resig, creator of popular streaming platforms theChive and Atmosphere, happens to be one of the largest collectors of Banksy\u2019s works on the planet. And depending on who you ask, Resig and Shultz made plans to bring the Banksys to Key West over a few drinks late one evening. The conversation between pals is coming to life a year later.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s just connected to everybody,\u201d Shultz said of Resig. \u201cWe met at the Porch years ago over a unique painting that now hangs at General Horseplay.\u201d And while Shultz might allow that story to be told down the road, his friendship with Resig will benefit Key West with one of the rarest displays of art on the planet. \u00a0<\/p>\n
