George Russell has claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint at the Dutch Grand Prix, the Briton converting his pole position into a win ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris.<\/p>\n
Russell had made a strong launch when the 24-lap event got underway and \u2013 despite seeing his advantage ebb and flow at times \u2013 the Mercedes driver managed to maintain a decent lead over Norris as the laps progressed.<\/p>\n
While a fight unfolded behind in the latter stages for second place \u2013 with Leclerc sweeping past Norris on Lap 18 \u2013 Russell remained clear at the front and crossed the line in P1 just as rain started to fall, marking the third time that he has turned pole position into a Sprint triumph.<\/p>\n
Leclerc held onto second place for Ferrari \u2013 the Monegasque making his soft tyres last well \u2013 while Norris faced pressure from a chasing Kimi Antonelli down to the wire, but the McLaren racer ultimately took third 0.3s ahead of the championship leader.<\/p>\n
The other papaya machine of Oscar Piastri was fifth, having held off home hero Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, and the remaining points-paying positions were filled by Ferrari\u2019s Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly for Alpine.<\/p>\n
Audi\u2019s Gabriel Bortoleto just missed out in ninth, as did the Racing Bulls of Arvid Lindblad in the Racing Bulls. Liam Lawson took P11 as his solid stand-in performance for Red Bull continued, ahead of Alpine\u2019s Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls substitute Yuki Tsunoda.<\/p>\n
The Haas pair of Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman placed in 14th and 15th, followed by the Williams of Alex Albon, the Aston Martins of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas in the Cadillac.<\/p>\n
Carlos Sainz for Williams and Cadillac\u2019s Sergio Perez completed the classification, while Nico Hulkenberg had retired his Audi earlier in the Sprint before rejoining the action in the latter stages.<\/p>\n
AS IT HAPPENED<\/p>\n
After a few weeks off for the sport\u2019s traditional summer break, the 2026 F1 season resumed with an action-packed day at Zandvoort on Friday as the drivers embarked on one hour of practice before heading into Sprint Qualifying.<\/p>\n
While championship leader Antonelli had led the way during the weekend\u2019s sole practice hour, it was his Mercedes team mate Russell who swept through to take pole for the Sprint, with the Briton lining up ahead of Norris, Leclerc and Piastri. Antonelli, meanwhile, had to settle for P5.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, Lawson claimed 11th place at the wheel of a Red Bull \u2013 the New Zealander substituting for an injured Isack Hadjar \u2013 while his Racing Bulls replacement Tsunoda was just one position behind in 12th.<\/p>\n
In the build-up to the Sprint, it was confirmed that both Sainz and Alonso would start from the pit lane due to set-up changes being made on their respective cars. The remaining 20 cars, meanwhile, headed to the grid as start time neared amid dry but overcast conditions in Zandvoort. When the tyre blankets were removed, it was revealed that most of the field had bolted on the medium compound, with the exceptions of Leclerc and Bearman on the soft.<\/p>\n
Prior to the 24-lap encounter, the stewards announced that Bortoleto would be investigated after the Sprint for an unsafe release. But for the time being attentions were focused on the 100km dash, and there was early trouble for Perez as the Cadillac was wheeled back into the pit lane while the rest of the pack set off on the formation lap.<\/p>\n
When the lights went out for the rest of the grid, Russell made a strong launch to hold the lead, while the sister Mercedes of Antonelli was quick to snatch P4 from Piastri through Turn 2. Norris, meanwhile, soon found himself under pressure from Leclerc as Verstappen closed in on Piastri.<\/p>\n
A little further back, Colapinto had gained a position on Tsunoda during the first lap and tried to challenge Lawson on the second tour before having to back out. Up at the front, Russell had stretched his advantage out to one second over Norris by Lap 3 \u2013 and at the back, Perez belatedly joined the action as the Cadillac team tried to gain some valuable data from the event.<\/p>\n
Russell\u2019s lead started to come down a little on the following lap, with Norris, Leclerc, Antonelli and Piastri all covered by five seconds. Antonelli was looking particularly racy, the Italian rapidly chasing down Leclerc in the fight for third. Elsewhere, Verstappen had Hamilton on his tail.<\/p>\n
There was disappointment over at Audi as Hulkenberg pitted to retire the car early on due to a power issue, while Sainz received a warning from the stewards for being out of position at the Safety Car line during the start.<\/p>\n
As Lap 10 ticked down, Russell had broken the Overtake Mode mark by stretching his lead out to 1.6s. To make things worse for Norris, the Briton now had Leclerc only 0.8s behind him, the McLaren driver reporting that he had \u201cno rear\u201d in the car. By this stage, the drivers in the points-paying positions were Russell, Norris, Leclerc, Antonelli, Piastri, Verstappen, Hamilton and Gasly.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, Lawson had closed to half a second behind his usual team mate Lindblad in the battle for P10 as the former continued his run in the Red Bull. Further ahead, Leclerc was getting even closer to Norris, and Verstappen had started to pile pressure on Piastri, having seen Hamilton\u2019s earlier challenge fall away.<\/p>\n
With eight laps remaining, Hamilton had again edged nearer to Verstappen \u2013 bringing the gap back down to under one second \u2013 while Leclerc was nail-bitingly close to Norris, the Monegasque moving to within a few tenths as the scrap over the final top-three slot continued.<\/p>\n
The decisive move came on Lap 18 as Leclerc dived down the inside of Norris into Turn 1 \u2013 leaving the reigning World Champion vulnerable to Antonelli. Meanwhile Albon was informed by his Williams team that they were expecting \u201clevel 1 rain\u201d in two laps\u2019 time \u2013 meaning that, if this happened, it would arrive near the very end of the Sprint.<\/p>\n
There appeared to be conflicting reports over this, with Verstappen told that the showers would not happen before the close of the event despite some dark clouds gathering. Back on the track, Antonelli remained over half a second adrift of Norris entering into the penultimate lap, with Verstappen a similar distance away from Piastri in the battle for fifth.<\/p>\n
While Hulkenberg rejoined the action following his earlier retirement, all eyes were on Antonelli to see if he could make a move on Norris \u2013 but up ahead it was victory for Russell, who took the chequered flag just as rain started to fall.<\/p>\n
Leclerc followed 1.36s behind in second, while Antonelli was unable to find a way past Norris and had to settle for fourth behind the World Champion. Piastri added to McLaren\u2019s tally in fifth, and the final points on offer were taken by Verstappen, Hamilton and Gasly respectively.<\/p>\n
