The Emus have been crowned champions of the FIBA U18 Asia Cup, capping off a perfect, unbeaten campaign with a hard-fought 89-79<\/a> win over China in Sunday’s Gold Medal game.<\/p>\n

Unlike some of the blowout victories that defined Australia’s run through the tournament, this one required the Emus to dig deep. China proved a genuine test throughout, matching Australia’s intensity and refusing to let the contest get away from them, but the Emus’ composure and depth ultimately proved decisive when it mattered most.<\/p>\n

A QUARTER-BY-QUARTER BATTLE<\/p>\n

Australia set the tone early, opening with a strong 26-18 first quarter to build a foothold in the contest. China responded in the second term, outscoring the Emus 24-18 to cut into the margin, before Australia reasserted control in the third quarter, edging the period 25-22.<\/p>\n

The game tightened further in the fourth, with China clawing back to outscore Australia 15-20 in the final term, but the Emus’ first-half foundation proved enough to see the game through.<\/p>\n

The lead tracker told the story of a genuinely contested final \u2014 Australia’s biggest lead of the game reached 16 points, but the margin was tested throughout, with 5 lead changes and 5 times tied across the 40 minutes. Bailey Hanson was outstanding in the decider, leading all Emus scorers with 17 points while also topping the team’s efficiency charts. Hanson shot 5-of-13 from the field but was clinical from the free-throw line, converting 7-of-8 attempts, and added 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a game-high 4 steals in a complete two-way performance across 27 minutes.<\/p>\n

Jai Fa’ale continued his standout tournament with 19 points, including 4-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, while Yahya Basaran added a typically efficient 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, along with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks.<\/p>\n

Isaac Riddle made a significant impact on the boards off the bench, hauling in a team-high 10 rebounds, including 7 offensive boards, in 18 minutes of action. Harry Cook was also efficient in a support role, scoring 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with 9 rebounds.<\/p>\n

Antonio Browne facilitated well throughout, recording 6 rebounds and 4 assists, while John Aryang added 5 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.<\/p>\n

Basaran was joined by teammate Jai Fa’ale in being named to the Tournament’s All-Star Starting Five, recognition for two players who were instrumental in Australia’s unbeaten run from the group phase through to the Gold Medal game.<\/p>\n

The win completes a perfect run through the FIBA U18 Asia Cup for the Emus, who navigated the group phase, quarter-final, semi-final and gold medal game without a loss. The campaign was defined by strong team balance, standout individual performances from the likes of Yahya Basaran and Jai Fa’ale throughout the tournament, and a squad depth that consistently allowed Australia to wear opponents down over the course of games.<\/p>\n
