{"id":866075,"date":"2026-08-24T00:14:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T00:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/866075\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T00:14:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T00:14:17","slug":"century-old-bajool-explosives-reserve-approved-for-expanded-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/866075\/","title":{"rendered":"Century-old Bajool Explosives Reserve approved for expanded operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A secretive facility more than a century old has been approved for expansion, to meet increased demand from Australia&#8217;s mining industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Bajool Explosives Reserve, one of four state government-owned reserves, has expanded by more than 600 hectares since 2022 and will soon begin increasing its output.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s quite an important reserve for not just Queensland, but for the rest of Australia as well,&#8221; said Rob White, Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) explosives director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s why we call it the &#8216;Bajool in the Crown&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s the gateway down to New South Wales and across to Western Australia as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The site, about 30 kilometres south of Rockhampton in Central Queensland, is used to store, manufacture and dispose of explosives mostly for the mining industry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a high vis shirt smiling in front of buildings.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fdd616a97845afe4fe867f285a551845.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rob White says the expansion is driven by increased demand. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr White confirmed among the materials stored at the high-security centre, were tonnes of ammonium nitrate, which can be made into ammonium nitrate emulsion, to be sent to mines around the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The exact amount of explosives and the security measures around them could not be confirmed, due to commercial in confidence and security concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The facility also provides space for items including seized illegal fireworks, out-of-date ammunition and flares, to be safely destroyed inside large incinerators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s about safe and secure explosives [that are] heavily regulated and secure to the community,&#8221; Mr White said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With its proximity to the Rockhampton Port, also known as Port Alma, the country&#8217;s highest-volume licensed explosives port, precise operations inside the Bajool reserve have long been shrouded in secrecy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A black-and-white photo of horses pulling something out of sight in front of a train wagon.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/0ae38d420d15bd30fae1a911675b5103.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Horses transporting wagons with explosives to the Bajool Explosives Reserve in 1956. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p>History and expansion plans<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In addition to the Bajool site, the government has explosives reserves at White Rock near Cairns, Helidon near Brisbane and Brookhill near Townsville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bajool was originally gazetted for explosives purposes in the late 1800s and the site&#8217;s first magazine, a structure designed to safely store or detonate explosives, was built in 1913.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In its infancy it was primarily used for the gold mine in Mount Morgan, about 60km away, and coal mine Blair Athol, more than 400km from the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Bajool has played an important part moving forward in history for the mining industry,&#8221; Mr White said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A old grainy photo of a long flat-bed truck loaded with crates with a person beside it and on top.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4d8a1eef44b7460c604313ac786932e7.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Explosives being transported between Bajool and Port Alma in the 1980s.
