<\/p>\nA woman is dead after being hit by a car which then crashed into lunchtime diners at a shopping centre in Melbourne’s east.<\/p>\n
Police said the 27-year-old woman was walking across a pedestrian crossing at Westfield Knox when she was hit about 12:45pm.<\/p>\n
The car then veered into the restaurant.<\/p>\n
The pedestrian died at the scene.<\/p>\n
The vehicle’s 51-year-old driver and a passenger were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said they were both in stable conditions.<\/p>\n
A person sitting outside the restaurant was checked by paramedics at the scene.<\/p>\n

Emergency services rushed to Westfield Knox around 12:45pm (ABC News)<\/p>\n
“Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will attend to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
“Police do not believe the incident was an intentional act.”<\/p>\n
Earlier today, police had said the woman was a customer of the restaurant and was sitting outside when she was hit and killed.<\/p>\n
They have since clarified that she was walking across the road at the time.<\/p>\n
They say the incident unfolded in front of a large number of witnesses in the car park and at the restaurant.<\/p>\n
In a social media post, the restaurant, Martini and Co, was declared closed until further notice.<\/p>\n
“We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding,” it said.<\/p>\n
“Please stay safe.”<\/p>\n
Scentre Group, which manages Westfield Knox, said it was providing full support to police during the investigation.<\/p>\n
