The 36-year-old has battled soft tissue injuries in the back end of his career and he failed a fitness test on Monday, bringing a sad end to a successful stint at the Broncos that saw him help break a 19-year premiership drought last year<\/p>\n
\u201cThe left calf was giving me nerve issues, and then I had a little grade one strain in the right calf which has not bounced back as quickly as I would\u2019ve liked,\u201d Reynolds said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI trained today and thought I would be a chance to play one last home game\u2026 but it\u2019s not to be.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt pretty good out there\u2026 but I had some conversations with Madge and the medical staff and they were quite concerned with the limited training I\u2019ve done in the past couple of weeks. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve had a great career\u2026I\u2019m extremely fortunate I get to carry some great memories moving forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou want to play the game forever, and that\u2019s us as professional athletes. That\u2019s not reality. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe reality is you get old, you get brittle, and you get sore, and at the end of the day you can\u2019t keep competing forever. I knew this day was coming, and that I had to say goodbye at some stage and unfortunately that is today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reynolds won the 2024 NRL Grand Final with the Broncos and was part of South Sydney\u2019s premiership win in 2014.<\/p>\n
He finishes his decorated NRL career with 323 games over 15 seasons, two premierships across two clubs and is the second-highest points scorer in NRL history with more than 2,500 points. <\/p>\n
Reynolds joined the Broncos in 2022 after 10 seasons at the Rabbitohs and took over Brisbane\u2019s club captaincy. <\/p>\n
\u201cI had a fair mentorship coming through and that\u2019s all I\u2019ve ever wanted to be towards younger fellas,\u201d Reynolds said. <\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully I\u2019ve given them the opportunity to experience some great things that I have throughout my career.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to think that I\u2019ve contributed to a fair few people in my time of playing rugby league.\u201d<\/p>\n
