Queensland’s first case was on Moreton Island in late July but there is no current detection of the disease in poultry, nor evidence of large-scale deaths in the state.

Across Australia, there have now been confirmed detections of bird flu in most states.

In South Australia there have been at least three mass mortality events in wild birds and last week there was a confirmed detection of the disease in a marine mammal.

Mass deaths possible in Queensland

Deputy Director-General and Chief Biosecurity Officer Rachel Chay said Queensland remains low-risk but warned mass bird deaths could occur.

“We do have to be prepared that as the migratory seasons continue, both this year and in the coming years, that we may see mass events in Queensland,” Dr Chay said.

She added vulnerable bird species that are “suitable” to be vaccinated are being identified.

“Noting that these birds would have to be vaccinated twice so we need to either have them in captivity or be able to recapture them for a second vaccination.”

Dr Chay warned mass bird deaths like those seen in southern states are possible in Queensland. (ABC News: Meghan Dansie)

Dr Crook said the DPI has an Incident Management Team that is responding to the current case and will prioritise heightened surveillance and regular public communication.

“We are continuing our enhanced passive surveillance program throughout the state and would encourage the community and industry to continue to be vigilant,” Dr Crook said.

Primary Industries Minister Tony Perrett has told parliament protecting the state’s multi-million-dollar poultry sector is the government’s top priority.

People in Queensland are being urged to report sick or dead wild birds to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Queensland has recorded its second case of H5 avian flu after a dead migratory seabird tested positive on…

[10
64,63,133874,1845,34997,137,436475,208148,436474
post-867616","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-avian-flu","tag-bird-flu","tag-castaways-beach","tag-health","tag-primary-industries-minister","tag-tony-perrett","tag-wild-shearwater
["GET
!["A]("https://www.newsbeep.com/au/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/8534c18d69d6d06051f63f9f240f3274.jpeg")
