{"id":868503,"date":"2026-08-26T01:52:30","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T01:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/868503\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T01:52:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T01:52:30","slug":"older-australians-losing-independence-as-digital-divide-widens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/868503\/","title":{"rendered":"Older Australians losing independence as digital divide widens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Older Australians say they are struggling to maintain their independence as everyday services shift online and out of their reach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The digital divide means the responsibility is falling to loved ones, neighbours, and retirement village staff to bridge the gap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;s an experience familiar to 72-year-old Wendy Trow, who neighbours her 85-year-old sister, Majorie Jones, in the small Western Australian town of Balingup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My sister is a very smart lady, but she&#8217;s never used computers in her life, and so she just goes into a shell when she&#8217;s required to do something,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An older woman sitting at a table using a mobile phone. (ABC News: Scott Kyle)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Trow has taken on the role of digital navigator, helping her older sister access online government aged care services and banking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When the bank said that they were no longer going to use cheques, that was the final straw for her,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Her children are fantastic, but they don&#8217;t live in Balingup, so it&#8217;s fallen to me to do that,&#8221; Ms Trow said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Suddenly she had to give up her financial independence and trust me to do the right thing.&#8221;Digital divide has isolated older Australians<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Patricia Sparrow is the chief executive of the Council on the Ageing Australia, the peak body for older Australians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said the divide between those who can comfortably access online services and those who cannot had isolated some older people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is an issued that has resonated strongly with people who have contacted the ABC through <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-15\/have-your-say-audience-callout\/106876918\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Your Say project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It makes people feel that they can&#8217;t cope. It makes people feel stupid. Tell us what Australia should know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I managed my life really well without computers, and I just don&#8217;t seem to be able to switch onto the same wavelength as computers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I start getting nervous, and I feel stupid because I don&#8217;t understand \u2014 we don&#8217;t seem to speak the same language.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Nearly three hours&#8217; drive southeast of Perth, Balingup&#8217;s median age is 58, two decades older than the rest of Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In addition to helping her sister, Ms Trow has put together a small group of volunteers to help older community members who have had trouble accessing the government&#8217;s My Aged Care services on their own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It is an absolutely massive [responsibility], and what if we get it wrong?&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve had no training, we&#8217;re just using our common sense.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two older women smiling at the camera outdoors\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/f46ab35a366442ce79db0f77713708bc.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Marjorie Jones and Wendy Trow (ABC News: Gabrielle Mellet)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She believes her small town is one example of a broader national issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It will particularly be small, rural areas, but also in the cities, there&#8217;ll be people that are just falling through the cracks because it&#8217;s too hard,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Services &#8216;can&#8217;t be digital only&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Decades into the transition from paper to digital, research shows most older Australians are struggling to access online platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Data compiled by the Australian Digital Inclusion Index \u2014 which tracks people&#8217;s ability to access, afford and benefit from digital technologies \u2014 found more than 65 per cent of people aged over 75 were digitally excluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Although the 2025 study found improvements in access and digital ability over the previous two years, certain Australians remain more vulnerable to digital exclusion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, those living in regional and remote locations, people with a disability and public housing residents remained below the national average.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An older woman using a smartphone looking at a travel website\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/0c6162b638ab03ae574fc6c754e1a9b6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Data compiled by the Australian Digital Inclusion Index found more than 65 per cent of people aged over 75 were digitally excluded. (ABC News: Scott Kyle)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Sparrow said digital exclusion won&#8217;t disappear as generations shift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think you can just say this is a time-limited implementation issue that will resolve over generations,&#8221; Ms Sparrow said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are some people who will always have difficulty accessing and using digital platforms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Sparrow said older Australians who could not rely on relatives to manage their online services needed support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We have to acknowledge that things are moving increasingly to being digital first, but they can&#8217;t be digital only,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Everybody wants to be as independent as possible. (ABC News: Scott Kyle)<\/p>\n<p>Seminars instilling confidence<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Staff at Brisbane&#8217;s Bolton Clarke retirement villages introduced a digital literacy program three years ago after more residents fell for scams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We decided we needed more education to avoid this, but also to keep [the residents] using technology \u2026 because they needed to,&#8221; said Joe Griffiths, who runs the seminars across 27 villages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The program shows residents how to search online, what to look for in a scam, and how artificial intelligence works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Resident Joann Rose said these were topics that otherwise overwhelmed her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not tech-savvy at all. (ABC News: Scott Kyle)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Griffiths said it was particularly useful for people without loved ones around to help them understand new technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of the families are excellent, and then some of the people don&#8217;t have families,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So this is a place they can become part of a family, and ask the questions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Carmen Love said she liked learning face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I like getting into technology now, but instead of reading about it, I like to be shown, then I remember it,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In Balingup, Ms Trow said although she&#8217;s happy to support her sister, all vulnerable residents should have access to in-person help with banking and government support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They need to be available in each community so that people can go and talk to them, sit down in a room and talk to them face-to-face,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I fear what changes are going to happen in the future for me.
