Chery is launching yet another brand in Australia, and its first model for our market has been spied testing here ahead of its local debut.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0iCaur V25\u00a0will make its in-person debut in Australia at Everything Electric Sydney, which is being held over September 18-20, but just weeks before it makes its local public debut it’s been spied at a charging station in Goulburn, New South Wales.<\/p>\n

Images shared to the Facebook group Electric Vehicles for Australia<\/a> shows a V25 in a sedate silver finish, unlike the lurid orange paint seen in the press photos accompanying iCaur’s release announcement this week.<\/p>\n

Registration data shows this is an evaluation vehicle with a tare weight of 2120kg.<\/p>\n

The mid-size SUV made its global debut at this week’s Chengdu motor show in China as the fourth model from the iCaur brand, known in China as iCar.<\/p>\n

iCaur is due to be launched here early in 2027, though thus far the brand has confirmed only the V25 for our market, with pricing and specifications to be announced closer to launch.<\/p>\n

While its styling is reminiscent of rugged, body-on-frame off-roaders, it features car-like unibody construction.<\/p>\n

Chinese-market specifications confirm it uses an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain, with a 115kW turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine serving as a generator to recharge the 33.68kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery rather than driving the wheels directly. <\/p>\n

A pair of electric motors instead send drive to all four wheels, with the V25 boasting total system outputs of 335kW.<\/p>\n

It’s claimed to offer electric range of over 210km \u2013 understood to be measured on the more generous CLTC or WLTC cycle \u2013 and a total combined range of over 1200km.<\/p>\n

It measures 4636mm long, 1920mm wide and 1855mm tall on a 2820mm wheelbase, making it 36mm longer and 65mm wider than the\u00a0Toyota RAV4<\/a>\u00a0on a 130mm longer wheelbase. Boot space is 378 litres, expanding to 998L; both the first and second rows of seats are claimed to be able to fold flat, and there are 41 storage spaces in the cabin.<\/p>\n

Described as an \u201cexpressive new energy brand\u201d \u2013 ‘new energy’ being a Chinese term referring to electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), and EREVs \u2013 iCaur is said to offer \u201ca fresh proposition to Australia\u2019s rapidly growing SUV market\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"AiCaur 03\"iCauriCaur V23<\/p>\n

It differs from existing Chery brands such as Chery, Omoda Jaecoo and Lepas (the latter due here this year) by offering vehicles with extremely boxy, rectilinear styling.<\/p>\n

The V23 and V27 have already been revealed in right-hand drive form, making them shoo-ins for a local launch. The former is slightly shorter than the\u00a0Mazda CX-3<\/a>, while the latter is larger than the\u00a0Denza B5<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Land Rover Defender 110<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The first iCaur model was the 03, which isn’t sold as an iCaur in all markets as in many it wears either Chery or Jaecoo badging.<\/p>\n

Sitting between the V23 and V25 in size, it’s available as either an EV or EREV, and is also produced in right-hand drive.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re confused how to pronounce the name iCaur, as you might be with other Chery brands such as Lepas, a Chery Australia spokesperson confirmed to\u00a0CarExpert\u00a0that \u201cIt is pronounced as \u2018iCar\u2019 with a silent \u2018u\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chery was relaunched here with a factory-backed distribution operation in 2023, before the Omoda Jaecoo brand was launched in 2025. These brands will be joined by Lepas later this year, and by iCaur and Freelander \u2013 another Chery brand specialising in boxy SUVs \u2013 in 2027.<\/p>\n

Jetour, another brand that\u2019s part of the broader Chery Group, has also confirmed it plans to launch here in 2027.<\/p>\n
