(ABC News: Steve Kelly)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Edge Early Learning opened its first childcare centres in Queensland in 2017, bought 17 existing childcare centres in South Australia in 2022 and now runs 24 in the state, both in Adelaide and regional areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company&#8217;s website lists 68 Australian centres in total \u2014 including two in the ACT \u2014 and Edge said it was continuing to operate all &#8220;on a business-as-usual basis&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There will be no change to your care arrangements, centre opening hours or staffing. Families should continue to attend their centre as normal,&#8221; it told parents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-18\/mother-furious-canberra-childcare-centre-closes\/106929658\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canberra childcare centre ordered to close<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A Canberra mother had concerns for her daughter&#8217;s safety at Edge Early Learning in Higgins long before the ACT regulator ordered the centre to close.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are working with management and will be supporting centre staff to minimise any disruption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our immediate focus is to maintain the safe and ongoing operation of each centre while this urgent review is undertaken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In its statement, it said administrators had been appointed to &#8220;review the business and work with key stakeholders to determine the best path forward&#8221;, and that the process would allow the company &#8220;to assess its financial position and consider options for its future&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Centre closures earlier this year<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The development comes after a series of controversies involving Edge, including in Canberra <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-17\/canberra-childcare-centre-closes-worker-sacked\/106927398\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106927398\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">where a childcare centre was suddenly closed and a staff member terminated over a failure to respond to a serious medical incident involving a child<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last week, the ACT childcare regulator also issued a three-month suspension ordering one of Edge\u2019s two remaining centres \u2013 located in Charnwood \u2013 to close its doors from September 3. It is not yet known why the suspension was issued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, the regulator Children&#8217;s Education and Care Assurance, said &#8220;Edge has the right to appeal the decision and is legally required to communicate the suspension to families&#8221;, and &#8220;Under administration, the administrator can also exercise the right to appeal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In July, Edge&#8217;s Gawler East centre north of Adelaide was forced to close for a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-06\/edge-childcare-gawler-east-closed-after-allergic-reaction\/106883548\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106883548\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second time this year after a child was served food with an allergen the centre knew about<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In April, South Australia&#8217;s Education Standards Board (ESB)<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-21\/edge-early-learning-centre-forced-to-shut-in-sa\/106586790\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106586790\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> directed the Edge Early Learning centre in Munno Para West to close<\/a> after seven incidents of children being left unsupervised.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A closed childcare centre.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/11f8ae089b246bb0a80e87dae89c184d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Edge Early Learning centre in the ACT that was forced to close suddenly in July. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">SA Education Minister Lucy Hood said the Munno Para West and Gawler East sites remained shut, and that Elizabeth Park was also closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Edge has had its challenges in regards to compliance, and there are currently three services that are not currently operating,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There are 24 Edge services across South Australia, with 21 active.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Currently we do have a variety of services \u2014 I believe around 12 \u2014 that have various compliance actions on them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Hood said Edge contacted the ESB earlier today to inform them of the fact that they had entered administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My understanding is it&#8217;s around 2,200 families that are impacted,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s reassuring to know that it is business-as-usual, but if any families have any questions I&#8217;d encourage them to contact the director of their centre.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Edge said the voluntary administration process would occur over several weeks while the administrators &#8220;review the business and engage with stakeholders&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Families, workers face uncertainty<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tegan Gilchrist from parent advocacy organisation The Parenthood said the federal government should establish a national early learning commission &#8220;with oversight of provider growth, financial viability and quality&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">\u201cThis is another warning that we cannot continue treating early learning as a collection of private businesses and simply hope the market delivers a stable, safe and accessible system,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">SA opposition education spokesperson Heidi Girolamo said the development today was &#8220;concerning&#8221; and created &#8220;uncertainty&#8221; for thousands of families and Edge staff members.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"South Australian Liberal health spokesperson Heidi Girolamo.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/89f2848b2c7555938308e13978c95979.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Heidi Girolamo calls on the government to support affected families. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For many families, they&#8217;ll be asking the question: why has it got to this and why has it ended up happening with these centres in limbo?&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s when the government needs to step up and to show that support.
