{"id":868779,"date":"2026-08-26T07:22:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T07:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/868779\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T07:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T07:22:11","slug":"tadej-pogacar-destroys-vuelta-a-espana-field-to-win-stage-four-takes-dominant-overall-lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/868779\/","title":{"rendered":"Tadej Poga\u010dar destroys Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a field to win stage four, takes dominant overall lead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Four days is all it took for Tadej Poga\u010dar to end the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a as a meaningful contest, the Slovenian great once again riding away from the peloton to win solo and establish a massive lead over the rest of the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It has been 32 years since Tony Rominger led a grand tour from start to finish when he won the 1994 Vuelta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But with yet another thrilling display of daring, Poga\u010dar put himself in pole position to emulate the Swiss rider and become just the ninth man to lead a three-week race from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Superlatives have long been superfluous when writing about this Slovenian superstar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Things that should not be possible are made to look routine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When he hits the front of a race as the road goes into the mountains, the rest of the pack knows that their only chance is to ride at their own tempo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Any attempt to fly too close to this generation&#8217;s greatest star will surely send their hopes of finishing the race crashing to the ground, like Icarus.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tadej Poga\u010dar as seen from behind on the bike\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cf02c3149d23a21f47160e8745d7bd09.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As soon as Tadej Poga\u010dar is in this position, that&#8217;s likely to be the last the peloton sees of him. (Getty Images: Tim de Waele)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Poga\u010dar took off with just over 50 kilometres remaining of the 104.8km circuit around Andorra la Vella to claim yet another dominant victory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Decathlon CMA CGM put the power down at the bottom of the Collada de Beixalis climb, the second mountain of the day, and ripped the peloton to shreds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian Jay Vine led the charge in support for the Slovenian&#8217;s UAE Emirates XRG team, but with the pace already high, Poga\u010dar upped his rate to burst clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Decathlon&#8217;s Austrian leader Felix Gall tried to match Poga\u010dar&#8217;s pace in the initial throes of his attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, the Austrian, as so many riders have discovered before him, could barely hold the double-world champion&#8217;s wheel and quickly dropped off before being joined by the rest of the favourites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The pace was already super fast on the throttle right from the base [of the climb],&#8221; Poga\u010dar told media after the race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When Jay let me pass him on Decathlon&#8217;s wheel, I knew: &#8216;OK, I don&#8217;t want to get isolated from all those general classification contenders, because otherwise they&#8217;ll all gang up on me.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I tried to attack on the climb. When I saw that I could open up a gap, I just hoped I could hold on until the finish. (Getty Images: Alexander Hassenstein)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Poga\u010dar&#8217;s lead extended to over 3 minutes at one stage before he rolled home to win by 2 minutes and 39 seconds from Jarno Widar, with Gall third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 50km attack was his longest in a grand tour, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-10\/tadej-pogacar-tour-de-france-tourmalet\/106900030\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106900030\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bettering the 43km solo victory he launched in the Pyrenees last month at the Tour de France<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is another remarkable performance from the Slovenian to add to the extraordinary wins that have become so normal it is expected of him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-22\/tadej-pogacar-tour-de-france-wins-suspicion\/106881158\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why these people believe in &#8216;freak&#8217; Tadej Poga\u010dar&#8217;s victories<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As Tadej Poga\u010dar continues to mop up cycling&#8217;s biggest accolades and most controversial record, one former doper believes he&#8217;s found the answer to his success: he is just a &#8220;freak&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With two key objectives to come this season, the World Championships road race in Canada falls just two weeks after the Vuelta&#8217;s conclusion, with the Giro di Lombardia a further two weeks after that, Poga\u010dar may now be able to take things easier through the next two-and-a-half weeks of racing in Spain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 27-year-old&#8217;s lead in the general classification now stands at 3 minutes and 21 seconds, with four-time Vuelta winner Primo\u017e Rogli\u010d sitting second.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;To be honest, any lead is a bonus,&#8221; Poga\u010dar said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is fantastic, because now I can head into the coming days with peace of mind and a lot of confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re taking it day by day and staying focused.
