The MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood is a new club for 2026 that retails for $149.\u00a0 It offers surprising distance that keeps up with the big brands, and the downsides come mostly in the sound and feel categories.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/p>\n

MacGregor and Ben Hogan Golf are two of the most historic golf brands in existence.\u00a0 MacGregor entered the golf industry in 1897, and Ben Hogan Golf was founded in 1953.\u00a0 Now they are both owned by the same company, Golf Brands Inc. and the companies have pivoted to a low cost, direct to consumer model.\u00a0 The MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood offers near identical performance to the Ben Hogan PTx MAX fairway wood [review HERE<\/a>].\u00a0 On the best strikes, both clubs can produce shots comparable to any fairway wood out there.<\/p>\n

Similarly to the Ben Hogan PTx MAX fairway wood, MacGregor promises unbeatable price, max launch, and max forgiveness.\u00a0 It sounds too good to be true, and I am left wondering what MacGregor\u2019s definition of \u201cMAX\u201d is.\u00a0 That being said, the performance can\u2019t be ignored, and this is a club that will work nicely for a lot of golfers out there.<\/p>\n

Looks<\/p>\n

From every angle, the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood is a miniature version of the Tourney MAX driver [review HERE<\/a>].\u00a0 The crown has the same carbon fiber middle that fades to solid black at the edges.\u00a0 It also has the grey \u201cM\u201d alignment aid.\u00a0 The shape of the Tour MAX FW is very nice \u2013 symmetrical, and slightly triangular.<\/p>\n

The scoring lines on the face are black.\u00a0 Compared to the white scoring lines of the Ben Hogan PTx MAX fairway wood, the MacGregor Tourney MAX feels like it was meant to be launched off the tee.\u00a0 The white lines of the Ben Hogan PTx MAX help me notice the loft of the club, which inspires more confidence hitting out of the fairway or rough.\u00a0 For those in the market for a fairway wood at this price point, this is a key difference, as both clubs offer very similar performance.<\/p>\n

The sole of the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood centers moderately sized MacGregor branding.\u00a0 It gets its character from the two slashes of green in the middle of the geometric patterns.\u00a0 Overall, this club has an understated look in the bag that will keep it from looking dated after a season or two. Sound & Feel<\/p>\n

The MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood has a harsh feel with very little feedback.\u00a0 On my favorite fairway woods, I appreciate the feel they offer, where a center strike feels great, and I can feel the difference when I hit a ball off of the toe or the heel.\u00a0 With the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood, I had a lot of trouble feeling where the ball hit the face.<\/p>\n

The MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood produces a loud, high pitched sound at impact.\u00a0 It reminds me of hearing a crashing cymbal.\u00a0 The sound is consistent on strikes all across the face.<\/p>\n

\"MacGregor<\/a><\/p>\n

Performance<\/p>\n

MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood produces high ball speeds and offers plenty of forgiveness.\u00a0 On swing speeds of 100 mph, it produced ball speeds of 147 mph, which is a smash factor of 1.47.\u00a0 This is in the same range as ball speeds produced by my gamer fairway wood.<\/p>\n

\"MacGregor<\/p>\n

The forgiveness on the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood was impressive.\u00a0 On mishits, the ball speed stayed about 140 mph.<\/p>\n

The launch angle was 11 degrees, and the spin is around 2500 rpm, which are both too low for me.\u00a0 These would be pretty good numbers for a driver.<\/p>\n

\"MacGregor<\/p>\n

Overall the performance of the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood was nearly identical to the Ben Hogan PTx MAX fairway wood.\u00a0 With both brands being owned by the same company, perhaps they were developed by the same people.\u00a0 The same points I made about the performance of the Ben Hogan PTx MAX fairway wood are also true for the MacGregor.\u00a0 The clubs produce top of the line distance with low spin and low launch.<\/p>\n

\"MacGregor<\/p>\n

In testing, I hit both clubs very straight to produce these numbers.\u00a0 Someone who slices or fades the ball will, in theory, produce higher spin and launch, and someone who hits hooks or draws will produce lower spin and launch.\u00a0 If you fade it, these clubs could be a perfect fit.\u00a0 If you draw it, these clubs will most likely fly too low.\u00a0 There are a lot of golfers who fade, or who struggle with a slice.\u00a0 If that is you, these clubs need to be seriously considered, especially considering the price point.\u00a0 The Ben Hogan PTx MAX fairway wood retails for $219, and the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood retails for $149.<\/p>\n

Finally, the MacGregor offers customers some unique options.\u00a0 Across the numerous flexes, there are three stock shaft options.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t noteworthy, but the website states that they can special order any other shaft you might want, which is.\u00a0 If you prefer to do your own club work, you can buy the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood as just a head. Conclusion<\/p>\n

MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood produces distance and offers a level of forgiveness that is up there with any fairway wood out there.\u00a0 At $149 it is significantly cheaper than most other options, so anyone interested in this club has to understand there will be some trade-offs.\u00a0 With the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood, the trade-offs come mostly with the sound and the feel which offered very little feedback.\u00a0 For me, the club did not spin enough or launch high enough.\u00a0 If you are someone who hits fades or slices, the MacGregor Tourney MAX fairway wood will bring the spin down, and could be a perfect fit for you at an impressive price point.
