Not too long ago, South Australian filmmaker Anthony Frith made an adaptation of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs\u2019 1918 dinosaur novel, The Land That Time Forgot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Which sounds pretty impressive, but he made it for z-grade specialists The Asylum, the modern-day skid row studio that gave us Sharknado<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, Frith also made a documentary about the making of The Land That Time Forgot<\/a>, and here it is.<\/p>\n

What is Mockbuster about?<\/p>\n

With self-effacing humour and a remarkably clear eye, Mockbuster<\/a> shows how a desperate Frith, stuck making corporate videos to support his young family, cold-emailed The Asylum to see if he might find purchase there.<\/p>\n

He quickly found himself helming The Land That Time Forgot<\/a> \u2013 the first Asylum film shot in Australia \u2013 on a tiny budget, with a six-day schedule, and no room for error or ego.<\/p>\n

What unfolds is a fascinating look at filmmaking at the shallow end of the pool \u2013 which, for all its budgetary and aesthetic limitations, is not short on heart.<\/p>\n

There\u2019ve been plenty of incredible behind the scenes documentaries in the past \u2013 Eleanor Coppola\u2019s Hearts of Darkness<\/a> and Werner Herzog\u2019s Burden of Dreams<\/a> come immediately to mind.<\/p>\n

However, we don\u2019t often get such insight into low budget filmmaking. Often because there\u2019s no money for it, ironically enough.
