UPDATED, 1 pm: Gungahlin Drive has reopened after the fatal crash between a car and a group of cyclists on Thursday morning (27 August).<\/p>\n
One cyclist was killed and two more were taken to Canberra Hospital after the tragedy.<\/p>\n
An ACT Policing spokesperson said police could not yet confirm the personal details of the cyclist who died as their next of kin were yet to be notified.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson said the second cyclist remained in hospital in a critical condition, while the third cyclist was still in hospital, but they had less-serious injuries.<\/p>\n
The driver of the car is continuing to assist police with their inquiries.<\/p>\n
THURSDAY, 27 August, 10 am: A crash between a car and a group of cyclists in northern Canberra on Thursday morning (27 August) has killed one rider and sent two others to hospital.<\/p>\n
An ACT Policing spokesperson said a group of cyclists was riding on Gungahlin Drive, near the intersection with Kosciuszko Avenue, when they were involved in a crash with a car.<\/p>\n
Tragically, one of the cyclists died. Two more were taken to Canberra Hospital, one in a critical condition.<\/p>\n
The police spokesperson said the driver of the car was assisting police with their inquiries.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson said the exact number of cyclists in the group was currently unknown.<\/p>\n
Gungahlin Drive remained closed between The Valley Avenue and Well Station Drive at 10 am. Police expected it would remain closed for several more hours.<\/p>\n
Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.<\/p>\n

Pedal Power ACT executive director Cecily Michaels said the crash was \u201cheartbreaking news\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the person who died,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur thoughts are also with the injured riders, the driver, everyone waiting for news and the emergency services personnel who responded.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said Pedal Power urged the community not to speculate or assign blame while the police investigation continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder the Safe System approach, people will make mistakes, but those mistakes should not result in death or serious injury,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone has a role to play, while governments and those who design and manage our roads have a particular responsibility to create a transport system that protects human life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pedal Power continues to advocate for a transport system that protects everyone, including people riding on-road, through safer infrastructure, connected cycling networks and effective education and enforcement of road safety laws, including minimum passing distances.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, our immediate concern is for everyone involved,\u201d Ms Michaels said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe stand with the family and friends grieving an unimaginable loss and with all those affected by this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n
