Oh, and while we’re at it, America’s Next Top Model.

For fans of: Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action and Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel

Long Story Short — Netflix, out now

BoJack Horseman and Tuca & Bertie fans, rejoice: Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Lisa Hanawalt’s latest show is delightfully reminiscent of their previous works in terms of tone, animation and narrative style.

But at the same time, it’s entirely distinct.

There are no talking animals, for one.

Long Story Short tells the sweeping story of the dysfunctional and unmistakably human Scwhooper family, starting in the 1950s and jumping across multiple timelines of varying levels of absurdity to chronicle coming of age, love, parenting, religion, intergenerational trauma, and raising kids despite it.

How a depressed talking horse changed adult animation

Equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking and daring, the popularity of this cartoon about a chemically unbalanced horse has endured for a decade.

Each of the 10 30-odd-minute episodes in this decidedly Jewish story focuses on a different character or relationship dynamic.

There’s fiercely protective matriarch Naomi Schwartz (Lisa Edelstein), her comparatively meek but deeply feeling husband Elliot Cooper (Paul Reiser), and their three children: Avi (Ben Feldman) the unmoored eldest son, who brings a shiksa home to meet the family on the worst day possible; Shira (Abbi Jacobson) the defiant lesbian middle child in an interracial relationship; and Yoshi (Max Greenfield), the Todd Chavez-coded youngest who succumbs to a mattress-in-a-tube multi-level-marketing scheme called TAMIT (There’s a Mattress in There).

Far from disjointed, this back-and-forth saga is full of quests and yearning, and it perfectly articulates the chaos of family.

Every single episode will make you laugh, and many will hit you in the gut and force you to contemplate your existence, much like BoJack. It’s also the kind of show you’ll get something different out of on every rewatch. One of them owns a poodle named Monty True Madness. Another brags about having spent £140,000 (more than $29,000) in one go at Harrods. Bizarrely, there’s also a Far North Queenslander who intermittently affects a Kylie Minogue-style British accent. And Real Housewives tragics (complimentary) may recognise Karen Loderick-Peace, who first appeared on the Jersey iteration of the show.

It doesn’t take long for the first big fight to crop up, which is of course about whether a certain cast member borrows couture instead of buying it (a mortal Housewife sin).

Almost 20 years into the Real Housewives phenomenon, the producers are well across their audience’s desires.

For fans of: The Real Housewives universe

Outlander: Blood of My Blood — Stan, out now

The TV adaptation of Outlander, Diana Gabaldon’s historical fantasy romance series, is about to wrap up after eight seasons … only four seasons after it jumped the shark with protagonists Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitríona Balfe) ludicrous move from Scotland to the American colonies.

A prequel that recaptures the spirit of the show’s beloved first few seasons was surely only a matter of time.

Enter Blood of My Blood.

Set in the Outlander universe, the 10-part standalone series boasts a new highly skippable intro and two sets of fated lovers — Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), whose warring clans forbid their relationship in 18th century Scotland, and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine), who share a secret correspondence during World War I.

Loading Instagram content

Outlander tragics (again, complimentary) will recognise those names as Jamie and Claire’s parents, respectively.

In fact, there are endless familiar faces for fans of the book and show, and it’s fascinating to meet so many of the characters we thought we knew well as entirely different people in their young adulthood.

In this sense, Blood of My Blood is to Outlander fans what House of the Dragon is to Game of Thrones enthusiasts.

You can expect lots of Gaelic-speaking, kilt-wearing Scottish Highlanders resisting British rule and looking hot while doing it, as well as rugged landscapes and political intrigue — the series kicks off with the laird of the Mackenzie clan’s shock death and no clear successor.

You can also expect to be less enamoured (as with the original) with the British side of the story, and to find the fantasy elements of the series just as questionable.

Thankfully, Blood of My Blood is fast paced, with fully immersive period settings, and the romance storylines are so good that you’ll almost forget Sam Heughan is nowhere to be found. Almost.

This isn’t a poorly made prequel that does a disservice to the original series. Outlander: Blood of My Blood is better than anything we’ve seen from the Outlander universe in years.

For fans of: Outlander, The Empress, The Buccaneers

Warning: This article mentions eating disorders, disordered eating and restrictive eating practices.
