{"id":870805,"date":"2026-08-27T23:48:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T23:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/870805\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T23:48:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T23:48:11","slug":"nepal-floods-live-updates-aussies-still-missing-as-nepal-flood-deaths-near-400","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/870805\/","title":{"rendered":"Nepal floods live updates: Aussies still missing as Nepal flood deaths near 400"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists so far believe a potential cause of the floods could have been an avalanche\u00a0or landslide caused by an earthquake recorded in the area.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible a broken part of a glacier temporarily dammed a river, leading to the built-up waters surging ahead when the blockage disappeared.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/65f7f910323dc09fa486057f3ffe365e7834c8c6d0af2b530735eef4c9a3d4ba.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Damaged buildings in Trishuli, Nepal.\u00a0Ezra Acayan<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lower part of a glacier has really come off,\u201d said Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist at the University of Graz in Austria who is currently based in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the imagery it\u2019s like someone cut with a huge knife through the whole lower part and it fell off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steiner said a mass of glacial ice dropping from a great height could have felt like a bomb exploding, resulting in the chaos that followed.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists said it is too early to draw a direct connection between global warming and Wednesday\u2019s catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>However, they said that as Earth\u2019s temperature rises because of human activities such as burning oil, gas and coal, the chances of such disasters increase, especially in the Himalayan mountains, which are warming considerably faster than many other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to be cautious and not draw a connection yet.
