{"id":871089,"date":"2026-08-28T05:30:58","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T05:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/871089\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T05:30:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T05:30:58","slug":"us-open-2026-draw-australians-in-action-taylah-preston-alex-de-minaur-carlos-alcaraz-news-how-to-watch-first-round","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/871089\/","title":{"rendered":"US Open 2026 draw: Australians in action; Taylah Preston, Alex de Minaur, Carlos Alcaraz news; how to watch first round"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taylah Preston is ready to level up and challenge tennis\u2019 best at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/us-open-26hd\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a> after cracking the world\u2019s top 100 for the first time this week.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year-old Western Australian &#8211; known for fearless shot-making and her high intensity &#8211; joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/tennis\/billie-jean-king-cup-2026-australia-great-britain-preview-talia-gibson-exclusive-interview-20260331-p5zmjn.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Talia Gibson<\/a> (22) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/person\/maya-joint-6i6m\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maya Joint<\/a> (20) as the third young Aussie to reach the milestone in the space of 18 months.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/607f17fa4f58e2237e042a3c34e88dda6ffbaf6e.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Taylah Preston moves into the second round.\u00a0AP<\/p>\n<p>Preston\u2019s rise comes after winning the W100 Tokyo in April and the WTA 125 Vancouver in August.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an amazing feeling,\u201d Preston said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s taken a lot of hard work, a lot of years. But it\u2019s definitely been a goal for a long time now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Preston has been grated a wildcard at the US Open, which starts in New York on Monday (AEST).<\/p>\n<p>Preston will take on American world No.89 Alycia Parks in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m extremely grateful to be given a chance to compete in the main draw in New York, it means a lot to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve put in a lot of hard work with my team and can\u2019t wait to get out there and compete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicole Kriz, Tennis Australia\u2019s director of player development, said Preston\u2019s potential was immense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReaching the top 100 is a fantastic milestone, but knowing Taylah\u2019s work ethic, character and appetite for growth, we genuinely believe this is just the beginning,\u201d Kriz said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is exceptionally engaged, curious and is always striving to become the best version of herself every day. She is an outstanding person with great character and an incredible work ethic, which makes her a fantastic role model for the next generation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Preston is one of 13 Australians in the singles main draw, with Chris O\u2019Connell, Tristan Schoolkate and Storm Hunter hoping to join them via the rain-delayed final round of qualifying on Saturday (AEST).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787895058_947_ad697b11d139dc7dc2605f28672531d262348f88.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Alex de Minaur is the No.6 seed at this year\u2019s US Open.\u00a0Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>World No.6 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/person\/alex-de-minaur-1m52\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex de Minaur<\/a> will play a yet-to-be-determined qualifier in the first round, with Botic van de Zandschulp, Zizou Bergs and world No.13 Rafael Jodar then lying in wait if results go according to rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish phenom Jodar will meet Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis &#8211; playing on a protected ranking &#8211; in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>Rinky Hijikata will meet No.3 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round, while James Duckworth has drawn 30th seed Matteo Arnaldi.<\/p>\n<p>Fit-again Carlos Alcaraz will open the defence of his title against Roman Safiullin.<\/p>\n<p>It will be Alcaraz\u2019s first singles match since April, after the two-time US Open champion was forced to miss the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/french-open-tennis-5xk\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">French Open<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/wimbledon-641\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wimbledon<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/tennis\/2026-carlos-alcaraz-withdraws-wimbledon-wrist-injury-20260520-p5zyyd.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">because of a right wrist injury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard returned to play with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/person\/serena-williams-5cc\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Serena Williams<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/tennis\/us-open-news-serena-williams-carlos-alcaraz-mixed-doubles-highlights-video-photos-20260826-p60rmx.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mixed doubles tournament and looked rusty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He may have to be sharper against Safiullin, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, upsetting Andrey Rublev and Joao Fonseca along the way before falling to 24-time Grand Slam singles champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/person\/novak-djokovic-4n6\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Novak Djokovic<\/a> in four sets.<\/p>\n<p>Safiullin also upset Alcaraz, ranked No.2 at the time, in the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz avenged that loss the following year at the Paris Olympics in their lone other meeting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/person\/alexander-zverev-257h\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Zverev<\/a>, the French Open champion who became the No.1 seed in New York when Jannik Sinner pulled out with a knee injury, will open against Italian Lorenzo Sonego.<\/p>\n<p>Two-time defending women\u2019s champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/person\/aryna-sabalenka-6fuc\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aryna Sabalenka<\/a> opens against Camila Osorio.<\/p>\n<p>The top-ranked Sabalenka, who has struggled during the North American hard-court season, could face Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, the No.6 seed, in the quarter-finals. <\/p>\n<p>Despite her patchy form, Sabalenka is still the favourite to win the women\u2019s tournament with most bookmakers, ahead of Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
