{"id":871146,"date":"2026-08-28T06:50:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T06:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/871146\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T06:50:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T06:50:12","slug":"from-galaxies-to-knees-particle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/871146\/","title":{"rendered":"From galaxies to knees | Particle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forrestresearch.org.au\/profiles\/dr-connor-bottrell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Connor Bottrell<\/a> didn\u2019t look through a telescope until he was an adult, which makes his current job all the more intriguing.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the <a href=\"https:\/\/forrestresearch.org.au\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forrest Foundation Research<\/a> Fellow studies galaxies. More accurately, he studies the chaos that ensues when galaxies crash into each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big question I\u2019m trying to answer is what is the missing mass in the universe?\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/85-of-the-matter-in-the-universe-is-missing-but-were-getting-closer-to-finding-it-237459\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The vast majority of mass in our universe is unaccounted for<\/a>. There\u2019s an invisible something hiding out there. We know it\u2019s there because it leaves its fingerprints on the things in the universe we can see \u2013 the light, gas and stars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scientists call this invisible something \u201cdark matter\u201d and have all manner of ingenious methods of studying those fingerprints. Connor\u2019s method, though, might be the most extreme.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Connor grew up in Victoria, Canada, and his parents helped foster an interest in the natural world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although he excelled at maths in school, particularly applying maths to nature, by university, he realised it wasn\u2019t the path he wanted to go down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So he course-corrected, moving towards big datasets associated with observations of our universe.<\/p>\n<p>After completing his PhD at the University of Victoria, Connor wanted to pursue a career around the world \u2013 and Australia was high on his list.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a lot of very amazing conference experiences in Australia. So I thought, oh, I\u2019ll just go straight there after my PhD.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t to be. After an unsuccessful application, he considered other trans-Pacific options and found himself in Japan, where he worked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipmu.jp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got proper mathematicians, physicists who are working on particle colliders, cosmologists who are working on the most exotic physics you can think of in the early universe, and then some galaxy people, like me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Those experiences with other scientific disciplines were eye-opening, Connor says, because they forced him to think how his work fit into a larger context. But his eyes were still on Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Collisions<\/p>\n<p>After his 2 year stint in Japan, he found the position he\u2019d long been after in Western Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the Forrest Research Foundation, in conjunction with the University of Western Australia, Connor spends his days trying to nail down what dark matter could be.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To do so, he can\u2019t just go and smash a few galaxies together \u2013 he doesn\u2019t have that kind of power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he simulates galaxy collisions with powerful computers and compares those computer-generated results with real-world observations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hoped this work will enable particle physicists to narrow their search for the elusive something that makes up dark matter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Connor is kind of like a detective, though he\u2019s not trying to find a murderer \u2013 he\u2019s dusting for fingerprints at the crime scene.<\/p>\n<p>Experimental physicists, with <a href=\"https:\/\/particle.scitech.org.au\/atoms-galaxies\/into-the-neutrino-fog\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">colliders and detectors buried deep underground<\/a>, then can use those fingerprints on their road to discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Knee to Know<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not all galaxy-gazing, however. Connor spends 2 days a week working at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthrolase.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ArthroLase<\/a>, a medtech company in Perth that is aiming to improve robotic knee surgeries. Sure, galaxies don\u2019t seem to have a lot in common with joints, at first blush.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But for a computational astrophysicist, the same models can be used to study both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beauty of medtech is that all the diagnostics and stuff are images,\u201d Connor says. \u201cAnd images are the currency of astronomers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About <a href=\"https:\/\/aoanjrr.sahmri.com\/knees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">80,000 Australians undergo knee replacement surgeries<\/a> every year, and the aim at ArthroLase is to more accurately guide the robots that cut away damaged tissue and bone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Connor says some weeks he is using the same tools to create better maps of the cartilage and bone.<\/p>\n<p>Whether knees or galaxies, Connor\u2019s mindset is shaped by a hunger for knowledge. And it has to be.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not always easy \u2013 science is a slow and difficult process and Australian funding for research is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/this-value-predicts-future-quality-of-life-in-australia-it-s-tanking-20260727-p60iuc.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at historic lows<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It can feel like a daunting career, particularly for young researchers.
