{"id":871180,"date":"2026-08-28T07:24:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T07:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/871180\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T07:24:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T07:24:12","slug":"football-news-2026-uefa-legal-challenge-against-gianni-infantino-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/871180\/","title":{"rendered":"Football news 2026 | UEFA legal challenge against Gianni Infantino; statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/uefa-1n96\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UEFA<\/a> is seeking to gather evidence for a potential legal challenge in Swiss courts against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/gianni-infantino-6ftf\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gianni Infantino<\/a> for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/football\/fifa-news-gianni-infantino-selling-business-plan-collapse-money-boycott-tournaments-20260801-p60kj3.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">failed plan to sell stakes<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/fifa-1lvs\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIFA<\/a>-run tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>The governing body of European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/football-25l0\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">football<\/a>, which overseas 55 member associations, is preparing for \u201ccriminal proceedings,\u201d with reports a complaint against Infantino could be filed in Switzerland &#8211; the home of FIFA headquarters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787901851_430_7cfc55c2ed4f9a02a70d0e2aad7b23bc43066020.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Pressure continues to mount on FIFA president Gianni Infantino.\u00a0AP<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that UEFA has filed documents in a Manhattan court in an effort to obtain evidence connected to a plan to sell a stake in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/fifa-world-cup-5x5\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Cup<\/a> to a US-based investment fund run by Joshua Kushner, whose brother Jared is married to US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/person\/donald-john-trump-2tq\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s daughter Ivanka.<\/p>\n<p>The filing was also submitted to FIFA\u2019s North America headquarters in Florida, as well as to Thrive Capital Management and JP Morgan, both based in New York.<\/p>\n<p>According to the filings, UEFA\u2019s claim is that a 20 per cent stake at $5.8 billion AUD was extremely undervalued and a proper value assessment was never completed. <\/p>\n<p>English media is reporting other FIFA officials may also be named in the complaint and accused of financial mismanagement under \u201cSwiss Criminal Code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Infantino\u2019s plan, which involved creating a subsidiary that would run FIFA\u2019s commercial events, was abandoned after backlash from member federations.<\/p>\n<p>UEFA was the first federation to call for Infantino\u2019s resignation in the wake of the failed investment plan, as did CONCACAF &#8211; the governing body of North American, Central American and Caribbean football &#8211; and the Asian Football Confederation. <\/p>\n<p>Key figures at UEFA met in Monaco before the Champions League draw on Thursday to discuss various football matters, one being Infantino\u2019s presidency. <\/p>\n<p>Infantino is currently in his second term as FIFA president and has already expressed an intention to run for his third and final term in a March election.<\/p>\n<p>The Swiss sports administrator has run without opposition in each past election.<\/p>\n<p>UEFA has made clear that the consequences of Infantino\u2019s recent movements as president has resulted in all trust being broken. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFIFA cannot investigate itself and expect the football community simply to accept its conclusions,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787901852_326_16166012a8f72040bf69db4139a905efc6fd4c3f.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">FIFA president Gianni Infantino stands next to Donald Trump at the World Cup final.\u00a0Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe consequences of this crisis go beyond governance. The trust required to exercise the office of FIFA President has been broken and cannot be restored by withdrawing one proposal, issuing assurances or promising reform after the event.
