At the latitude of ESO’s
\nParanal Observatory<\/a>
\nin Chile, about 25 degrees south,
\nEarth’s<\/a>
\nrotation moves the planet’s surface eastward at over 1,500 kilometers per hour.<\/p>\n

And while that’s faster than the
\nspeed of sound<\/a>
\nat sea level, the motion is
\nimperceptible<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Still, that motion can be revealed in the
\napparent rotation<\/a> of the
\nnight sky by
\nphotographing<\/a>
\nstar trails.<\/p>\n

This star trail image was composed from a digital stack of 300
\nconsecutive 25-second exposures made with a camera
\nfixed to a tripod to trace the star trail arcs.<\/p>\n

The graceful arcs are concentric and centered at the south
\ncelestial pole<\/a>,
\nthe southern hemisphere extension of Earth’s axis of rotation into space.<\/p>\n

One of the observatory’s operating 1.8 meter auxiliary telescopes,
\nAT 3<\/a>,
\nappears beneath the south celestial pole,
\nfaintly illuminated in the foreground of this
\nwell-planned scene from a rotating planet.<\/p>\n
