{"id":872262,"date":"2026-08-29T04:32:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T04:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/872262\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T04:32:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T04:32:13","slug":"asks-us-to-take-the-fall-ceo-behind-scary-ad-blasts-golf-brand-as-legal-threat-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/872262\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Asks us to take the fall\u2019: CEO behind \u2018scary\u2019 ad blasts golf brand &#8230; as legal threat looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A war of words has erupted with golf equipment giant Callaway and the media firm \ufeffbehind an advert that showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/golf\/golf-news-2026-good-good-and-callaway-receive-backlash-for-video-showing-a-woman-being-pushed-to-the-ground-pga-tour-urged-to-cut-ties-with-good-good-video\/news-story\/285cd5a3e3edfadde8d32070f80b1906\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a male golfer shoving a woman to the ground,<\/a> after the commercial sparked widespread outrage.<\/p>\n<p>Callaway severed ties with the brand over the ad, made by prominent YouTube golf platform Good Good Golf, while also pledging a $1 million donation to domestic violence organisations.<\/p>\n<p>The firm has stepped away from sponsoring a PGA Tour event in November as a result of the backlash.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"i-amphtml-fill-content i-amphtml-replaced-content\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787977933_498_poster-fallback.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FOX SPORTS, available on Kayo Sports, is streaming The 2026 PGA Tour LIVE &amp; Exclusive | New to Kayo? <a href=\"https:\/\/kayosports.com.au\/en-AU\/welcome\/golf?extcamp=fsaeditoriallinkgolf-edt-fsp-lnk-awr-grc-glf-kyo&amp;channel=fsa&amp;campaign=fsacontra\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Join now and get your first month for just $1.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ad featured Good Good founder Garrett Clark knocking Epson Tour professional player Alexis Miestowski to the ground when she attempts to reach for his driver, before warning her: \u201cDo not touch my new driver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clark has since released an apology video; but company CEO and CEO-founder Matt Kendrick took to social media to slam Callaway for their handling of the incident, accusing the company of having approved the ad before backtracking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting that @CallawayGolf asks us to make an ad then approves it then asks us to take the fall then drops us in a coordinated media blitz and covers it up by giving a million dollars away thinking everyone will be ok with it,\u201d Kendrick wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>It is his first post on the platform since November 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In a since-deleted post, Kendrick responded to a message saying he should \u201csue Callaway for every single penny they\u2019re owed plus damages\u201d, writing \u201cNot opposed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ad, released online last week before being pulled, received heavy criticism for its depiction of violence against women, including calls for a boycott of Callaway products.<\/p>\n<p> Callaway said it had reviewed the matter and \u201chas ended its relationship with Good Good, effective immediately.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last several days, we have listened and reflected deeply on the hurt and disappointment caused by the video we reposted,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe heard from individuals who shared personal experiences related to violence against women, and their stories were powerful reminders that this issue touches the lives of far too many people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnequivocally, violence against women is unacceptable and should never be trivialized, normalized, or used as entertainment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Callaway will commit $1 million to support organisations working to prevent violence against women, it added.<\/p>\n<p>Good Good Golf, which centers its business around a successful YouTube channel aimed at bringing a younger audience to the sport, had already apologised for the controversial advert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe posted a video to our channels that ultimately depicted actions that are not aligned with our values as a brand,\u201d Good Good said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Clark released an eight-minute video statement apologising for the ad, saying it was \u201cnot at all what we (Good Good) stand for\u201d and offering \u201cclarity\u201d on how it passed muster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood Good marketing team reached out to us and they said \u201cWe have this idea to essentially recreate or do a spin-off of the movie Obsession\u201d, Clark said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way that it\u2019s going to work is Garrett is going to be obsessed with his driver, and anybody who touches Garrett\u2019s driver will become possessed with the obsession of the driver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking back &#8211; super dumb ad concept, terrible ad in general. Not the greatest idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he said that he didn\u2019t \u201cactually tackle\u201d Miestowski.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost people probably knew that it was a complete skit and that I didn\u2019t actually tackle a woman, so I want to say that first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never would, and I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking back at it: terrible concept, terrible ad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce I watched it back, and it got posted.
