What simply started as a sweet treat in a kindergartener\u2019s lunch box has triggered a heated worldwide parenting debate.<\/p>\n
And the internet is devouring every last crumb. <\/p>\n
It all began when a mum, Michelle, asked other parents to stop sending their children to school with Oreo biscuits and other lollies because her daughter, Ava, was not allowed to eat them. <\/p>\n
It didn\u2019t take long for the group chat to take a turn for the worse, with @AshlieghJamz documenting the entire drama in a viral 12-part series on Instagram. <\/p>\n

Mum demands \u2018basic rules around lunch boxes\u2019<\/p>\n
Michelle kicked off the heated debate by asking the other five mums in the chat to come up with some \u201cbasic rules around lunch boxes\u201d.<\/p>\n
They initially agreed, fearing there was a possible allergy issue; however, the discussion quickly descended into chaos. <\/p>\n
\u201cNo nothing allergy related! Ava came home really upset yesterday because one of the girls had Oreos in her lunch,\u201d Michelle responded, adding that she doesn\u2019t allow such snacks in her home. <\/p>\n
\u201cI just wondered if we could agree not to send things like Oreos, chocolate candy, etc. so the kids aren\u2019t comparing lunches?\u201d the mum continued, seemingly annoying the other parents. <\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t really think we can control what everyone else packs though?\u201d a woman named Casey retorted. <\/p>\n
\u201cWith respect, I am not changing my daughter\u2019s lunch because your daughter wants an Oreo,\u201d mum Charlotte vowed.<\/p>\n
Parents purposefully pack Oreos in protest<\/p>\n
The saga continued when Michelle contacted the school asking for an approved list of snacks. In response to the request, administrators said while they \u201cencourage families to choose healthy options\u201d, the contents of a lunch box are \u201cultimately at the discretion of parents\u201d.<\/p>\n
After Ava got her hands on one of the chocolate biscuits, Michelle reportedly inspected some of the children\u2019s meals before school. <\/p>\n
This prompted the other mums to purposefully pack not one, but two Oreos \u2013 with some even splurging on the double-stuffed variety.<\/p>\n
Oreogate triggers worldwide debate<\/p>\n
The saga has attracted millions of views and has since erupted into a worldwide debate about food restrictions and parenting boundaries. <\/p>\n
While some people have argued that all parents should encourage healthy lunches for their children, many others have deemed Michelle\u2019s \u201centitlement\u201d as \u201castounding\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember being envious of other kids\u2019 lunches as a child. That\u2019s why kids start trading. It\u2019s ridiculous that parents would police other kids\u2019 lunches. This has gone too far!\u201d one woman commented online. <\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t back down! Send the Oreos \u2026 the bubblegum, gumdrops \u2026 hell, send the whole chocolate factory!\u201d another chimed in. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll send what I darn well want. It\u2019s a life lesson for kids: you can\u2019t always get what you want,\u201d a third said.<\/p>\n
However, not everyone agreed.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny mum who packs Oreos needs an education on what she is feeding her child. I wouldn\u2019t touch an Oreo with a ten-foot pole,\u201d one woman argued. <\/p>\n
Aussie expert says mum\u2019s request is \u2018unreasonable\u2019<\/p>\n
So is Michelle\u2019s request reasonable? According to Donna Moala, the founder of Parenting Collective, the short answer is no. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf there\u2019s an allergy or a genuine safety issue, that is different and worth a private conversation with the school,\u201d she told news.com.au. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut if it\u2019s a preference rather than a safety concern, no, it\u2019s not reasonable to ask another family to parent by your rules.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHonestly, I don\u2019t think this is an Oreos question at all,\u201d Ms Moala continued. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe real story here is about the pressure young families are under, and how differently we all cope with it. <\/p>\n
\u201cEvery parent gets to decide what comes into their own home and lunch box; that\u2019s ours to control. But asking another family to change what they pack is tricky because that\u2019s not our call to make, and it\u2019s not sustainable to try and manage other people\u2019s choices.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Moala said the entire situation could have been a \u201cbeautiful teachable moment\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen a child says, \u2018Why does she get Oreos and I don\u2019t?\u2019 that\u2019s a gift opportunity, a chance to say, \u2018We don\u2019t have those in our home, and it\u2019s totally okay to feel annoyed about that, and it\u2019s also totally okay that other families do things differently\u2019,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There\u2019s one word on every parent\u2019s lips this week: Oreogate.
