On Monday, the Phillies traded outfielder Tommy Pham to the Chicago White Sox, ending his minor-league stint with the organization before he ever appeared in a major-league game for Philadelphia.

The trade was reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Pham, 38, signed with the Phillies in late June, at a time when the club was looking for more right-handed hitting outfield depth. The fit made sense then. The Phillies needed coverage against left-handed pitching, and Pham brought a long track record of competitive at-bats and experience in several roles.

He gave Triple-A Lehigh Valley a representative showing.

In 156 at-bats with the IronPigs, Pham hit .250 with a .381 on-base percentage, .772 OPS, three home runs, 25 RBIs, 32 walks and 38 strikeouts.

But the major-league path never opened.

The emergence of Derek Hill and Bryan De La Cruz changed the Phillies’ outfield picture. Hill, acquired from the White Sox earlier in June, has given the Phillies defense, speed and right-handed coverage. De La Cruz, signed to a minor-league deal last offseason, has also produced in a part-time role since being called up.

The Phillies also have Justin Crawford and Brandon Marsh in the outfield mix, Bryce Harper back in right field after the Luis Arraez trade and Edmundo Sosa capable of playing the outfield if needed.

That left Pham without a clear spot.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Phillies had been shopping Pham for multiple weeks before his time in the minors was up.

Pham has previous ties to Chicago, playing for the White Sox in 2024 before being moved to St. Louis at that year’s deadline. He now returns to the organization as September rosters expand.

For the Phillies, the move clears outfield depth from a crowded picture. With rosters expanding to 28 players Tuesday, they are expected to add a smaller group of reinforcements, with catcher Rafael Marchán a likely option as a third catcher.

Pham was brought in as insurance.

By the end of August, the Phillies no longer needed that insurance the same way.

On Monday, the Phillies traded outfielder Tommy Pham to the Chicago White Sox, ending his minor-league stint with…

[558
64,63,591,357595,85
post-875396","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mlb","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-mlb","tag-phillies-news","tag-sports
["GET
