The trench and the nearby ocean floor are crawling with creatures that seem like they belong in an alien carnival, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/L3T1ltrrUAg?si=WzxY71Ed0Z0sblth&amp;t=8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">see-through squid<\/a> with a hornlike appendage, pale pink lobsters, a lumbering <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/L3T1ltrrUAg?si=nCSd6xmv_NryK_ms&amp;t=41\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">king crab carrying 100 hitchhiking barnacles<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/L3T1ltrrUAg?si=gMsx5-LSPO8Js_By&amp;t=32\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ghostly squid<\/a> that hovers somewhere between goofy and grotesque.<\/p>\n<p>Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciam.bynder.com\/m\/7acd9bca21fa3bad\/original\/Telescope-Octopus-Video.mp4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A translucent telescope octopus floats in the deep sea.<\/p>\n<p>ROV SuBastian\/Schmidt Ocean Institute<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">In July and August scientists onboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute\u2019s research vessel Falkor (too) spotted the oddities through the eyes of an underwater robot as they explored the Mar del Plata Canyon. One of his favorite areas was a large stretch of seafloor he nicknamed the \u201cBeet Field\u201d because it was covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/eTLt6m2f3rk?si=cySQKxTBdBg0hSlT&amp;t=119\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spidery red octocorals<\/a>. They found hints of unique ecosystems and identified new species at that time. Deep-sea canyons such as Mar del Plata act like funnels, channeling and concentrating the waters. \u201cThis confluence creates one of the most energetic oceanic regions in the world, fueling high productivity and supporting remarkable biodiversity,\u201d says Jonathan Flores, a postdoctoral researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council in Argentina. When the underwater robot dove deep, the science team saw red. The science team documented rich biodiversity, including deep-sea coral reef environments filled with sea anemones, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, snails, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Misha Vallejo Prut\/Schmidt Ocean Institute (<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/4.0\/deed.en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-NC<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">\u201cOne way to confirm is by bar coding\u2014sequencing a piece of mitochondrial DNA,\u201d says Mike Vecchione, a research zoologist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who was not involved in the expedition.
