IMG has been appointed golf course management partner for Thatluang Lake Golf Resort in Vientiane, marking the company\u2019s first course management assignment in Laos and adding another stop to its expanding Asian footprint.<\/p>\n
The Faldo Design course sits inside the Thatluang Lake Special Economic Zone and is being built by Flagstick GCCM, with turf supplied by STS. It\u2019s due to open late this year \u2013 a timeline that puts Laos, a country with next to no golf tourism infrastructure to speak of, on a collision course with the rest of Southeast Asia\u2019s increasingly crowded golf-travel map.<\/p>\n
The turf specification
For a market this new, the agronomy detail matters more than usual \u2013 it\u2019s effectively the first data point on what championship golf in Laos will actually play like. Fairways, tees and roughs are being laid with Zeon Zoysia, chosen for density and playability rather than pure aesthetics. The greens go a different route: TifEagle Bermuda, a grass with a long championship pedigree built on consistency and the ability to hold fast green speeds through heat and humidity \u2013 both of which Vientiane has in abundance for large parts of the year.<\/p>\n
Built for more than the course
The resort\u2019s academy and two-tier driving range are being positioned as a genuine development hub rather than a bolt-on practice facility, aimed at golfers across the skill spectrum. IMG\u2019s Russell Hannah, VP of Golf Course Services, framed the appointment as a long-game project rather than a single-site management deal, pointing to grassroots development and local player pathways alongside the international guest experience IMG is contracted to deliver.<\/p>\n
Why it matters for the region
Laos has a small, but growing golf-tourism identity \u2013 and this project aims to elevate that. A Faldo Design layout with proper agronomy and IMG\u2019s operational backing gives the country a legitimate opening chapter, at a moment when golfers across the Gulf and wider region are actively looking past the usual Southeast Asian circuits (Thailand, Vietnam) for something newer. Whether Thatluang Lake becomes a genuine addition to regional golf-trip itineraries \u2013 rather than a curiosity \u2013 will depend on how it performs once the courses are actually open and playable, which is still some months off.<\/p>\n
