Sixty years ago today, Jack Brabham secured his third Formula 1 Drivers\u2019 World Championship and completed one of the greatest achievements in Australian motorsport history.<\/p>\n

Brabham sealed the 1966 title at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on 4 September, completing a landmark season with the Australian powered Repco-Brabham team.<\/p>\n

The result made Brabham the first, and still only, driver to win the Formula 1 World Championship in a car bearing his own name and entered by his own team.<\/p>\n

Repco-Brabham also claimed the 1966 Constructors\u2019 World Championship, the first of two consecutive titles for the team.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

An Australian Formula 1 success story<\/p>\n

The championship winning Brabham BT19 was designed by Australian engineer Ron Tauranac and built by Motor Racing Developments, the company established by Brabham and Tauranac.<\/p>\n

It was powered by the Repco-Brabham RB620, a 3.0 litre SOHC V8 designed, developed and produced in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

Brabham won four consecutive grands prix during the 1966 season, taking victories in France, Britain, the Netherlands and Germany.<\/p>\n

Although he retired from the Italian Grand Prix, his championship lead was sufficient for him to secure the title with two rounds remaining.<\/p>\n

The success delivered Brabham his third Drivers\u2019 World Championship following his previous titles in 1959 and 1960.<\/p>\n

Brabham remains Australia\u2019s most successful Formula 1 driver, with three world championships and 14 grand prix victories.<\/p>\n

BT19 celebrated throughout anniversary year<\/p>\n

Repco has marked the 60th anniversary of the championship with a program of appearances and displays featuring the BT19.<\/p>\n

The car was exhibited at the Formula 1 Exhibition in Melbourne and appeared at the 2026 Adelaide Motorsport Festival.<\/p>\n

It later returned to the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, where it completed demonstration laps with Brabham\u2019s grandson, Sam Brabham, behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

The BT19 was also inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame in February. It became the Hall of Fame\u2019s 100th inductee and the first racing car to receive the honour.<\/p>\n

Alliance Airlines joined the anniversary celebrations by painting one of its Embraer aircraft in a colour scheme inspired by the famous Formula 1 car.<\/p>\n

A unique piece of Formula 1 history<\/p>\n

Only one BT19 was built. It competed during the 1966 and 1967 Formula 1 seasons and is now owned by Repco\u2019s Australian parent company.<\/p>\n

Brabham and Repco continued their success in 1967, when Denny Hulme won the Drivers\u2019 World Championship and the team secured a second consecutive Constructors\u2019 crown.<\/p>\n

Brabham died in 2014, aged 88, but his achievement with the BT19 remains unmatched six decades later.<\/p>\n
