Throw in the fact he\u2019s 18, and the excitement around his future is palpable. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/a73031ab0e748ea5758b8e8fbc2e8d785d21bdfa4bfb21e9744438833243c648.png\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Lucas Herrington speaks to media.\u00a0Hull City<\/p>\n<p>Like any teen, the concern will be how he handles the hype. <\/p>\n<p>His manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/football\/news-lucas-herrington-hull-city-socceroos-world-cup-sergej-jakirovi-exclusive-comments-20260903-p60tye.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sergej Jakirovi\u0107, told nine.com.au<\/a> there\u2019s no chance he will \u201cget crazy\u201d, such is the calm head on his shoulders. <\/p>\n<p>But with hype comes scrutiny and media interest, and on a Thursday afternoon UK time, Herrington sat at Hull\u2019s training ground in front of a screen full of Australian media ready to discuss his rise for half an hour. <\/p>\n<p>To be in the Premier League at 18 he said was \u201csuper special\u201d, admitting he still has a lot to learn amid a \u201cpretty crazy\u201d rise. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me it\u2019s just about trying to learn as much as possible, from the older boys in the team, and just try and take every game as a lesson, learn from it and to make myself a better player and help the team,\u201d Herrington said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a great experience for me so far, there\u2019s been some top teams that we\u2019ve played, every day I\u2019m just trying to get better, work hard and just help the team as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Herrington\u2019s last 12 months has book ended an incredible rise. There\u2019s been the move from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/brisbane-roar-fc-5tq\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brisbane Roar<\/a> to Colorado followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/socceroos-hpx\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Socceroos<\/a> debut and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/fifa-world-cup-5x5\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Cup<\/a>. At football\u2019s global showpiece, he learned about the highs and lows of football, having shown the courage to take a penalty against Egypt, which bent the bar and broke Australian dreams. <\/p>\n<p>Praise for his courage and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/football\/premier-league-news-lucas-herrington-exclusive-interview-hull-city-zlatan-ibrahimovic-call-20260828-p60sby.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">phone call from Zlatan Ibrahimovi\u0107 followed<\/a> before Herrington went home for a week and pushed the reset button. <\/p>\n<p>He then went back to Colorado and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/football\/news-lucas-herrington-named-major-league-soccer-team-lionel-messi-transfer-window-update-20260709-p60e1b.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">played against the stars of the MLS<\/a> before securing a $33 million move to Hull. <\/p>\n<p>His debut against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/manchester-united-1m1d\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester United<\/a> followed, a proud moment for Herrington with his mother and agent, Buddy Farah, in the stands. <\/p>\n<p>Now &#8211; with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/football\/carabao-cup-results-hull-city-beat-stoke-city-penalty-shootout-lucas-herrington-man-of-the-match-20260826-p60rm9.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carabao Cup player of the match title to his name<\/a> as well &#8211; he\u2019s officially a Hull City man. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The 18-year-old only left the A-League in January\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/776b8eab6adab6921dfb8cb682698666a1533682.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Lucas Herrington celebrates Hull\u2019s win over Manchester United on August 22.\u00a0Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Next will be more Socceroos duties. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a near certainty he\u2019ll be selected for Australia\u2019s friendlies against Brazil in late September, which would be a homecoming for him in Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p>His earliest memory of Suncorp Stadium was watching the Roar win the title in 2014. <\/p>\n<p>The humble Herrington offered that he\u2019d have to be selected first to make it a \u201cdream come true to play for the Socceroos in Brisbane\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that I\u2019ve always wanted to do and to play in front of hopefully a packed out Suncorp would be a dream,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaying in front of my family and friends would be awesome, so if I\u2019m selected, it\u2019d be a great experience to play a great couple of games against Brazil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Asian Cup will be an interesting watch for Herrington. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to imagine a Premier League club being too happy having a new signing absent for what could be a full month. But the realities of the Asian Cup wouldn\u2019t have been an unknown for Hull. <\/p>\n<p>The competition will take place in Saudi Arabia in January.<\/p>\n<p>Herrington repeated that any chance to represent the Socceroos is special and that \u201cwe\u2019ll cross the bridge when it comes to it\u201d. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Herrington was Australia\u2019s youngest player at the 2026 World Cup.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/8985ae476287e0bec0a951c4913d5d06347a2d913d871931fa893e7f54dc7ea9.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Herrington was Australia\u2019s youngest player at the 2026 World Cup.\u00a0Stefan Koops\/EYE4IMAGES<\/p>\n<p>For now, he\u2019ll train, play and then say goodbye to his mother, who will leave on Sunday after Hull\u2019s match against Aston Villa. <\/p>\n<p>How many minutes he gets in that match is an unknown. <\/p>\n<p>In both Premier League matches he\u2019s come on as a 60th minute substitute for Nobel Mendy, while starting in the Carabao Cup. <\/p>\n<p>He said an expectation around those minutes hasn\u2019t been set.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s obviously just game to game,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously two clean sheets has been great for the team, and I\u2019ve been very grateful to be involved in those.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I think it\u2019s just about, you know, being patient and just taking every opportunity that comes to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great group of lads, there\u2019s a great depth in the squad, so it\u2019s good to have positive competition for these spots. It\u2019s what you want in the Premier League, especially. You need it, so I think it\u2019s great for the team, great for the club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think everyone\u2019s just ready to play their part whenever they can, and it\u2019s about me staying patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout this interview, Herrington is consistently asked around what\u2019s changed for him football wise, but then it\u2019s put to him what\u2019s stayed the same. <\/p>\n<p>In essence, it\u2019s all about how to win. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re all very different leagues but in terms of things that don\u2019t change it\u2019s how to win a game whether it\u2019s the dark arts or every team playing differently, so adjusting to teams as they come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not sure how they\u2019re going to set up, so it\u2019s just about adjusting on the fly and being able to do so. I think that\u2019s very important, we do our research during the week, but you never know how a team\u2019s truly going to play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Herrington is settling into life in the Premier League. He\u2019s already become accustomed to the luxury cars that line the carpark after a match. <\/p>\n<p>MKM Stadium\u2019s player carpark sits right outside the ground, so there\u2019s no back doors to escape waiting media or fans. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/c14958565f044b497e140e43d23f7d2ec1855a54bd42c0a0e8f6d176bab47e56.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Lucas Herrington takes photos with fans.\u00a0Lachlan Harper<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/football\/news-lucas-herrington-debut-analysis-hull-city-manchester-united-buddy-farah-comments-20260823-p60qne.html\" class=\"sc-ZStEl fijHCo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The teen defender is more than happy to take photos and sign autographs<\/a> anyway, before heading off. <\/p>\n<p>On his days off he\u2019s explored the surrounding areas of Hull with his mother, who\u2019s been with him for several weeks while he\u2019s settled in. <\/p>\n<p>One thing Herrington hasn\u2019t had to do since moving is sing a new signing initiation song, but he may have to start that tradition himself. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually didn\u2019t have to (do one), I don\u2019t think we have them here, luckily, but I might have to get it installed for the new boys now,\u201d he smiled. <\/p>\n<p>In the end, that could be the legacy he leaves at Hull. <\/p>\n<p>It won\u2019t be the first time he\u2019s left his mark. <\/p>\n<p>At his former school back in Brisbane, Anglican Church Grammar School, also known as Churchies, a match day banner is rolled out at home games featuring a photo of the defender that says \u201cWhat legacy will you leave?\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a tradition Herrington wasn\u2019t aware of, and one that makes him smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, I think a lot of young footballers in Australia like me wake up at all hours of the morning to watch the Premier League,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, I can make them proud and make Australia proud, and just show the young players in Australia that there is a pathway, keep working hard, enjoy the process, and just have big dreams because dreams do come true like that for me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Since moving to Hull, Lucas Herrington has become the biggest name in Australian football.
