(ABC News: Billy Cooper)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company strongly defended its SPF testing at the time, publicly releasing the results of the testing it did to certify its SPF claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It also commissioned another test of the product at the same lab they had previously used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Both of those test reports returned results of above SPF 60.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An ABC investigation revealed experts had flagged <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-04\/questions-over-lab-that-tested-sunscreen-spf-claims\/105458458\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105458458\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">serious concerns about the results from the overseas testing lab it used \u2014 Princeton Consumer research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Do you know more about this story? Email: <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-22\/ultraviolette-sunscreen-ineffective-testing-product-withdrawn\/mailto:rachelcarbonell@pm.me\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rachelcarbonell@pm.me<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ultra Violette committed to doing additional testing on its product at alternative labs and on Friday released those results, many of which failed to meet the SPF 50+ claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement it said, &#8220;We had multiple independent labs conduct new tests of Lean Screen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This week, we received results from those tests that demonstrated significant and, candidly, atypical variability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Across eight different tests, Lean Screen has now returned SPF data of 4, 10, 21, 26, 33, 60, 61, and 64.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The brand has confirmed they will no longer work with Princeton Consumer Research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement PCR told the ABC that &#8220;any results provided by Princeton Consumer Research (PCR) are based solely on the specific samples submitted to us at the time of testing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Our reports accurately reflect the performance of those samples under controlled test conditions and in accordance with the relevant standards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-04\/questions-over-lab-that-tested-sunscreen-spf-claims\/105458458\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Questions over lab&#8217;s sunscreen tests<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">At least eight sunscreens that failed to meet their advertised SPF50 sun protection claims in a recent review had their original tests for certification done by an overseas laboratory whose results are being questioned by industry experts.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Speaking directly to its customers, the Ultra Violette statement said, &#8220;[The result variability] wasn&#8217;t good enough for us, and it isn&#8217;t good enough for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company announced it is voluntarily withdrawing the product from the market effective immediately and apologised to its customer base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are deeply sorry that one of our products has fallen short of the standards we pride ourselves on and that you&#8217;ve come to expect of us,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The same product is also being withdrawn in the US, where it is called &#8220;Velvet Screen&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The brand was careful to point out the issue did not affect its other products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Unlike the majority of our range, Lean Screen was created by a third-party manufacturer and\u202fwas the only sunscreen they made for us. We will no longer be making any SKINSCREENS\u2122 with that manufacturer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABC has confirmed Wild Child is the manufacturer of the Ultra Violette Lean Screen product.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement to the ABC, CEO of Wild Child Tom Curnow said the company had ceased using Princeton Consumer Research to test its products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were surprised and disappointed by inconsistencies in results from PCR, a laboratory long accepted by the TGA and widely used by Australian brands and manufacturers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company also said it has &#8220;initiated confirmatory testing&#8221; with alternative labs for products it manufactured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Consumer group Choice has called on the TGA to urgently provide an update.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Ultra Violette&#8217;s product may not be the only product that is affected and consumers deserve to know whether they can continue to trust SPF claims in Australia,&#8221; it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The TGA has told the ABC that its investigation is ongoing. It said, &#8220;Given the complexity and scale of the material involved, this process will take time.
