Antonelli had started at the back of the grid after taking penalties for power-unit changes, but showed searing pace throughout as he carved through the field \u2013 benefitting from an early red flag stoppage \u2013 before outracing Russell to win.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so happy, I could never have imagined to be here today, but we pulled it off.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the second restart I knew I was up there and could have had a shot for the win.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believed in it, especially when I was behind George, but it was really difficult to break away with the tow being so strong.\u201d Alpine\u2019s maiden pole sitter Pierre Gasly finished seventh ahead of Racing Bulls\u2019 rookie Arvid Lindblad, Franco Colapinto in the second Alpine and Yuki Tsunoda of Racing Bulls.<\/p>\n
Antonelli was the first Italian to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti of Ferrari scored his solitary triumph in 1966 but it is a massive blow to Russell\u2019s hopes of regaining ground in the championship.<\/p>\n
\u201cHuge congratulations to Kimi, an incredible result from him,\u201d said the Briton. <\/p>\n
\u201cI knew he was going to be in the mix when I saw he was P5 and P4 on the leaderboard at the beginning \u2026 I was struggling on the tyres, but I\u2019d have loved to be P1 today.\u201d <\/p>\n
The race started in dramatic fashion when Hamilton was forced off by teammate Leclerc.<\/p>\n

The Monegasque, who is a two-time winner at Monza, then lost control on the exit of the Parabolica at the end of lap two, going straight into the gravel and flying side on into the tyre barriers.<\/p>\n
Leclerc stepped out of the car, looking winded but otherwise unhurt. <\/p>\n
The incidents would later spark a war of words between the Ferrari teammates, with Hamilton unimpressed with the Frenchman\u2019s claim they \u201cwent too far\u201d with a first-lap battle for position.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was ahead in Turn 2. By the apex, I was ahead,\u201d Hamilton said. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo there was no \u2018we\u2019 in it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t race dirty. I\u2019ve always raced clean and fairly and always left space. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo I don\u2019t think they (Ferrari fans) should be worried about me.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve come into the team and tried to be respectful of space, and definitely not put the team in jeopardy. <\/p>\n
\u201cI stand by that and that\u2019s all I can talk about, on my side.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hamilton also had a barb for Ferrari, comparing them unfavourably to his previous team at Mercedes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it comes down to rules of engagement,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was at Mercedes, we had a written rule of engagement. We never really, really had it too bad – maybe between me and Nico (Rosberg) a couple of times, but more often than not it was good.<\/p>\n
\u201cHere there are no rules, and I think that\u2019s something that we need to try and address.\u201d<\/p>\n
The race was red-flagged after Leclerc\u2019s crash with Russell in the lead, having overtaken pole-sitter Pierre Gasly of Alpine.<\/p>\n
Antonelli, who began at the back of the field in 19th after exceeding the permitted number of power unit changes, had already moved his way up to 12th. Once the race restarted, he continued to pick his way through the field.<\/p>\n
On lap 18, he hit the front for the first time but that was the start of a desperate dogfight with Russell.<\/p>\n
Antonelli benefitted from a \u2018free\u2019 tyre change during a virtual safety car on lap 29 coming out on a fresh sets of mediums while Russell was left out on track with his hardpso tyres.<\/p>\n
