It wasn’t just the points at stake; it was the pride of the thing that mattered most.

It was an enthralling battle, even in the context of the unknowable battery strategies that have defined the 2026 engine regulations.

Second-placed Mercedes’ British driver George Russell looks on as he walks to the podium after the Italian Formula One Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza circuit in Monza, northern Italy on September 6, 2026. (Photo by Andrej ISAKOVIC / AFP)Source: AFP

They became increasingly creative with each encounter. At one point Russell attempted to hold Antonelli up on the outside line of Curva Grande, risking a rear-end collision, only for the Italian to dart right and sweep around his outside at the Roggia chicane.

A team order and an alternative strategy broke up the fight, but Antonelli’s pace on his second set of mediums was irresistible, and he resumed the lead with laps to spare.

Yes, the red flag helped Antonelli, and the virtual safety car assisted his strategy — more on that below — but there was no getting around who was the quicker driver on the day.

Russell was beaten again, and his championship deficit grew again.

“I’m going to take the positives from the weekend,” he told Sky Sports. “It has been more competitive for me, here and last weekend in Zandvoort, compared to pre summer break.

His body language wasn’t disappointed so much as it was resigned. Whereas at previous rounds his insistence that he’s taking things one race at a time had at least a whiff of optimism about it — a vague sense that he still felt he could wrest control of the situation — on Sunday in Monza it felt more like submission.

The damage of a defeat like this is almost incalculable. It’s surely beyond just championship points.

For Antonelli it was a statement performance. For Russell, who did nothing wrong and executed as well as he could, it felt defining too, but for all the wrong reasons.

WAS RUSSELL COMPROMISED BY HIS TEAM?

It takes nothing away from Antonelli’s victory to consider whether a favourable strategy helped him over the line.

Starting so far back meant the Italian took an alternative strategy into the race. While most of the leaders started on mediums, he started on hards to give him some strategic flexibility.

But that tyre choice looked set to bite him when the red flag flew.

Whereas all those who started on mediums or softs could switch to the hard tyre during the suspension and try to run to the finish, he would have to do the opposite — and getting almost 50 laps out of the medium or softs looked like long odds.

It meant that even when he passed Russell on lap 18, it was likely that he’d have to pit and the Briton wouldn’t.

Lance Stroll’s stoppage on lap 28 flipped that on its head.

The ensuing virtual safety car allowed Antonelli to save around eight seconds at his pit stop. With the benefit of fresher tyres, he won the race by 3.9s.

Ordinarily the lead driver gets strategy priority, and Russell was ahead at the virtual safety car.

Why wasn’t he given the call?

MONZA, ITALY – SEPTEMBER 06: Race winner Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Italy and Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team celebrates with his team during the F1 Grand Prix of Italy at Autodromo Nazionale Monza on September 06, 2026 in Monza, Italy. (Photo by Clive Rose/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

“The VSC came at an awkward time,” Russell said. “I don’t think the team knew what the right strategy was.

“Deciding to split the strategy was probably the right thing for the team to do. In hindsight of course it’s easy to say I should have pitted — or if I’d won the race, they would have said Kimi should have stayed out.”

Wolff confirmed that the team didn’t expect the two-stop to be quicker, so it never crossed the mind of the strategy team.

But he also denied that strategy was decisive in Antonelli’s victory.

“Today there was nothing that would have stopped him,” he told Sky Sports.

“There was no chance [for Russell].”

It’s an assessment that might as well be summing up the season to date.

ANTONELLI HAS ONE HAND ON THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Russell’s deficit is now out to 66 points. His championship hopes are now purely theoretical.

For Antonelli, though, if he squinted hard enough at the stack of dishes that formed the Monza winner’s trophy, he could probably just about imagine it was the Formula 1 championship.

The maths is certainly in his favour now.

Officially there are 10 rounds remaining this season, but right now it would appear more likely that we’ll get only nine in due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with Qatar and Abu Dhabi to be substituted for one race in Imola.

In that scenario, his 66-point lead is large enough that Antonelli can finish second to Russell in every race, including the final sprint, without losing top spot.

The Italian, who seemed genuinely overwhelmed by his victory, said it would be important for him to keep his feet on the ground.

“I just take it race by race, because you never know what can happen,” he said. “Today went well. We had a massive opportunity, and we took it.

“But of course next week we have Madrid, and it’s going to be a new challenge. We have to be on top of the game, because it’s a new track for everyone, and it’s going to be important to be on point in order to maximise the track time and everything.

“I’m going to enjoy this moment, then focus on the next one and focus on the next one again until the end of the season.”

FERRARI BLOWS ITSELF UP AT HOME

Italy got a winner on Sunday, but it’s the one the Italian tifosi anticipated.

Ferrari should have been in a position to at least claim a double podium, if not contend for victory.

Instead the team found a way to fulsomely embarrass itself on its biggest stage and write itself out of title contention.

It started on the first lap, when Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton made light contact in the chicane. Hamilton was ambitious in diving late into the first turn, while Leclerc — with the mitigating circumstances of cold tyres off the line — should have left his teammate more room on the exit.

The incident dropped Hamilton to as low as 11th, though he recovered to run as high as third after the restart.

Leclerc, however, didn’t even get that far after he repeated almost exactly his massive Parabolica crash from the 2020 Italian Grand Prix.

The Monegasque was defending third place from Oscar Piastri when he felt something not “quite all right” with his car.

“I went off [throttle] and went on again,” he told Sky Sports. “There was quite a bit of power then, and I lost the car.”

The distraught Ferrari lifer needed consoling by the trackside marshal before he returned to the paddock.

The team said the crash was severe enough to have potentially written off his brand-new engine, which will mean a back-of-grid penalty sometime later this season.

Leclerc’s result was painful, but Hamilton’s slump to an anonymous sixth was in some ways even worse.

MONZA, ITALY – SEPTEMBER 06: Charles Leclerc of Monaco and Scuderia Ferrari walks to the FIA Medical Car after crashing out of the race during the F1 Grand Prix of Italy at Autodromo Nazionale Monza on September 06, 2026 in Monza, Italy. (Photo by Peter Fox/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

His car was shown up for its continued lack of straight-line speed, leaving him last among the frontrunners — behind even the unfancied McLaren cars.

“One of the harder ones to swallow today,” Hamilton told Sky Sports. “I definitely was hoping for more. I gave it absolutely everything.”

There was even the obligatory baffling strategy call — or, in this case, non-call — when Hamilton, complaining about his wearing medium tyres, was not pitted during the virtual safety car, which Antonelli proved to be the winning strategy.

“I felt like we should have probably been on the hard tyre,” he said. “I thought they were going to stop us, and then they didn’t stop us, so I just ran out of tyres.”

Team boss Fred Vasseur, clearly deflated, attempted to justify the call by arguing Hamilton effectively lost nothing.

“If you have a look, we are 10s behind Max [Verstappen, who finished third] before, and we finished 10s behind [at the flag],” he told Sky Sports.

“On the top, if you do this [strategy], you have to overtake, and overtaking is not a favourite topic [of this car], but it would have been probably more difficult.”

Hamilton was 6.5s behind Verstappen at the virtual safety car, so he in fact lost 3.5s — a small enough margin to argue the point, but a negative margin nonetheless.

Whatever the specifics, Ferrari managed to turn what had started as a positive weekend into another gargantuan missed opportunity with an unconvincing explanation for it.

The engine clearly still needs work, but so too does the team need to improve its sharpness if it’s to contend in 2027 — for 2027 is surely now the aim.

“It’s too late for [title conversations] now,” Hamilton said. “I lost a lot of points today to those guys. They’re just ahead.

“We’ll do out best to keep pushing the rest of the season, but they’re out now, out ahead of us.”

McLAREN MAXIMISES RESULT DESPITE LATE-RACE JITTERS

McLaren ended the weekend with fourth and fifth and unexpectedly as the second-highest-scoring team, behind Mercedes, when it had been braced for far more pain.

The McLaren never really looked competitive until Oscar Piastri surprisingly challenged for pole position on Saturday, but race pace revealed the car’s weaknesses, with both drivers finishing 19s behind the rampaging Antonelli.

They lost time, though, in long-running battles with each other, Verstappen and Hamilton. In the era of the 50-50 hybrid engine, every battle costs massive race time because of the way a driver has to alter the optimal battery deployment strategy to attack or defend. In ‘normal’ circumstances, both drivers likely would have been closer.

Norris pipped Piastri for fourth on the final lap as the final chapter of their race-long duel, but it had been a much stronger performance for the Australian, and the teammates likely would have continued trading places had the race run longer.

That’s despite an unusual warning from McLaren late in the race for Piastri to focus on “clean” racing.

Norris had attempted to squeeze down Piastri’s inside on the run to Roggia but ended up on the grass. He immediately protested that he’d been pushed off, and the Australian shortly afterwards received an “instruction from the pit wall” to ensure he was engaging in “clean racing”.

But it was hard to see what earned the rebuke. Replays showed Norris diving into the smallest of openings late in the piece, and Piastri made no significant movement to nudge him onto the grass.

Even Norris himself admitted after the race that he didn’t see much in it and that his radio protestation had been reflexive rather than deeply felt.

“Sometimes you get a feeling of something [in the moment], but I don’t think he did anything wrong,” he told Sky Sports.

McLaren’s jumpiness not to jeopardise a decent haul of points — it’s now only 59 points behind Ferrari for second in the standings — is understandable, but it’s somewhat surprising, after both drivers competed so cleanly for the championship last year, that Piastri wasn’t allowed to get on with it given Norris appeared to have instigated the hairy moment himself.

You are bearing witness to history.
