A room as dark as space, sound insulated and capable of delivering a pile of popcorn to your hands on voice command. (To be fair, only Elon gets that… probably!)

Australian homes bring the outside inside. Large open-plan living rooms flooded by natural light. These spaces are great for almost everything, except immersing in sport, movies, TV shows and gaming – in entertainment.

Until now.

TCL’s flagship model in its SQD Mini-LED TV range has landed and it solves our greatest challenges. It deals with our heavy-handed sun while establishing immersive audio in a large open room and providing a sophisticated AI that knocks down mechanical barriers.

It’s the X11L.

Putting the Super in Quantum Dot

SQD is short for Super Quantum Dot, and it’s the next evolution in Mini-LED panel technology; a step beyond RGB displays. RGB Mini-LED start with three coloured light sources – red, green and blue – and combine them to approximate a white backlight. SQD flips the approach. It begins with a pure white backlight, which is a cleaner, more consistent source from which to build a picture.

That light then passes through a colour filter, and here’s where the quantum dots get “super.” Not super-sized, but super-shrunk. A standard quantum dot measures 60 nanometres, whereas SQD brings that down to 5 nanometres, a twelvefold reduction.

A better starting light + more precise filtering = accurate and vivid colour on the screen. Perfect for entertainment.

Why Brightness Matters

When looking for a premium TV for your open-plan living room, you might get a bum steer in your local retailer. OLED, the panel most buyers are steered toward, produces gorgeous images for sure, but in controlled darkness – they struggle the moment sunlight enters the equation. Most Australian homes defeat OLED: flawless victory.

So, what’s the kryptonite for natural light? Brightness.

The X11L has it in abundance, peaking at up to 10,000 nits (85-inch and 98-inch models). That headroom is what lets highlights stay convincing and shadow detail legible when the afternoon sun is competing for your attention.

But output without discipline just creates a new problem. Push a backlight hard and its glow can leak into darker parts of the frame, softening contrast and turning blacks grey. TCL’s counter is granularity: the flagship panel divides the screen in up to 20,736 independently controlled dimming zones (the 98-inch model), governed by its Halo Control System.

Each zone brightens or dims almost in isolation, so a bright element can blaze while the darkness beside it holds firm. They’re not fighting each other.

Even better, this headroom means the TCL X11L can reach towards the ceiling of what modern HDR standards and Dolby Vision can produce. A sunlit window, a chrome reflection, the glint off water, the flash of an explosion – this isn’t lost, getting you closer to the image the creator desired.

Run Hard, Play Hard

We’ve established that even on brighter days, TCL can deliver epic plays, but a great panel needs to keep up with fast action, too. The X11L runs a 200 Clear Motion Rate, with a 6.5ms response time and a 4k 144Hz refresh rate, so quick-moving sports and epic action scenes stay crisp rather than smearing. A 178-degree viewing angle means everyone in the room gets the same clean picture, too.

Audio is usually where slim televisions give up. There’s no room for real drivers, so the sound gets fired at the floor or the wall behind, arriving thin and hard to place. The X11L refuses that compromise.

Working with Bang & Olufsen, TCL engineered a multi-driver acoustic system resulting in a powerful audio experience built into the frame itself. The arrangement is unusual: a full-width, front-facing array sits beneath the screen, soundbar-style, projecting the left, centre and right channels straight at you rather than bouncing them off surfaces. Hidden side-firing drivers widen the field, while rear-mounted woofers add the bass that most built-in systems simply can’t produce.

It means clear dialogue, real separation and enough low end to sink you into your entertainment. The B&O partnership then leans into the software. Alongside the usual presets, its Beosonic control lets you shape the character of the sound on a simple visual dial rather than wrestling with frequency sliders.

Gamers are also well served, with four HDMI 2.1 ports, FreeSync Premium Pro VRR, auto low latency mode, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, game bar and, of course, HDR10+.

The Next Step in AI

The final piece of the puzzle is making the interface genuinely user-friendly. TCL is the first TV brand to launch with Google Gemini pre-installed I Australia, from which the X11L benefits.

Rather than stabbing at a remote, you can talk to the TV in plain language. Ask it to surface “a family movie with a good twist” and it understands the request, conversationally. Tell it the screen looks a little dark and it can adjust picture settings for you, no menu-diving required. On a display this capable, being able to fine-tune brightness or contrast by voice is a surprisingly natural fit.

All that’s left for you to do then, is nestle down into your couch. No closing the blinds; no death-scrolling apps; no telling the kids to be quiet… just immersive bliss.
