NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters) \u2013 Chinese qualifier Zheng Qinwen produced another spectacular fight back\u00a0to upset six-times major winner\u00a0Iga Swiatek 7-5 6-3 in \u200bthe\u00a0U.S. Open on Monday, recovering from 0-5 down \u200cin the opening set to reach the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n
The Olympic champion battled her way through qualifiers amid a career slump and has recaptured her top form in New York, getting the best of \u200can \u200bopponent who had led 7-to-1 in \u2060their head-to-head before Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI \u2060have to say I start the match not so well and after little by little I found my rhythm,\u201d said Zheng, whose chronic right elbow injury \u200bstunted her career and forced her to undergo surgery last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just focused point by point and \u2060little by little I started \u2060to play better tennis.\u201d<\/p>\n
She next plays either \u200bNaomi Osaka or Elena\u00a0Rybakina.<\/p>\n
Zheng appears to do her best work \u200bwith her back against the wall, recovering from five \u200cgames to love in the deciding set of her\u00a0third round match this week, and she found the magic again at Arthur Ashe Stadium, saving three set points \u2060to the increasing frustration of the 2022 champion Swiatek.<\/p>\n
Swiatek took a medical timeout after the third game of the second \u2060set, having a \u200cphysio come and massage her left thigh, \u2060but did not appear to struggle \u200bas she \u200creturned to the court.<\/p>\n
Zheng broke her \u200bopponent with \u2060a backhand winner down the line in the seventh game and broke again on the fourth match point, leaving Swiatek in tears again two years after she stunningly beat the Pole in the Olympic semi-finals.<\/p>\n
