Charles Leclerc will race in Madrid after further medical checks found no injury from his heavy accident at Monza.<\/p>\n
The Ferrari driver struck the barrier at the exit of the Parabolica on the second lap of the Italian Grand Prix. He reported neck discomfort and briefly had trouble seeing clearly with his right eye, but was released from the circuit medical center after the initial examination.<\/p>\n
Leclerc subsequently drove home to Monaco without discomfort. Further checks on Monday found no delayed problem, clearing him for Formula 1’s first visit to the Madring this weekend.<\/p>\n
Ferrari also has better news than the condition of the car initially suggested. The chassis and gearbox are understood to have survived the impact, although the power unit remains under examination.<\/p>\n
That engine matters because it was the updated unit introduced at Monza under Formula 1’s Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system. Early indications are that it may be reusable, but Ferrari has not yet confirmed that conclusion.<\/p>\n
A replacement could bring the season’s allocation into the discussion, but there is no basis yet for declaring a Madrid grid penalty. First the engineers must decide whether the Monza engine is merely offended or actually unusable.<\/p>\n
Leclerc’s fitness removes the larger uncertainty.
