(ABC News: Michael Lloyd)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Cheaper Home Batteries Program offers a generous subsidy for households \u2014 up to 30 per cent of the cost of solar battery systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australians have rushed to sign up, with more than 530,000 batteries installed since July 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The program is estimated to cost more than $7.2 billion over four years \u2014 about $5 billion more than originally announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Solar and consumer advocates have labelled the accusations &#8220;absolutely shocking&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal opposition will push for a Senate inquiry to probe the allegations while advocates want an urgent increase to safeguards, including more inspections and better consumer protections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Do you know more about this story? (ABC News: Chris Gillette)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was allegedly done by &#8220;unpacking the battery boxes \u2026 stacking the batteries and just taking enough photos to show on their STC Trading Application&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is illegal and whoever is behind this must be held accountable,&#8221; they wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In one extreme case, a customer alleged an installer turned up at night to remove their fully paid-for batteries two months after the installation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The man and his wife felt threatened and called the police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Peacock said he was shocked by the allegations of &#8220;outright theft&#8221; from staged jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That blew me away\u2026the brazenness of that,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Stephanie Tonkin, the CEO of the Consumer Action Law Centre, said if the claims of rorting were proven it would undermine the &#8220;policy goals and the trust in that system&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A middle aged man wearing a dark blue suit standing in front of Australian and Aboriginal flags\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/09a12e65d6225f33f7ebb2dd110af773.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dan Tehan is calling for an inquiry.
