{"id":885096,"date":"2026-09-09T01:22:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T01:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/885096\/"},"modified":"2026-09-09T01:22:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T01:22:13","slug":"australia-makes-its-mark-at-para-cycling-road-world-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/885096\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia Makes Its Mark At Para Cycling Road World Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia\u2019s Para cyclists have made their presence felt at the 2026 Para Cycling Road World Championships, claiming two world titles and 10 medals across four days of racing in Huntsville, Alabama.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Championships brought 348 athletes from 49 nations to the northern Alabama city from September 4 \u2013 7, with the coveted rainbow jersey at stake and the LA 2028 Paralympic Games now less than two years away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known as the Rocket City, Huntsville occupies a storied place at the heart of America\u2019s space program. This week, however, the focus was closer to earth, with the world\u2019s best Para cyclists taking to the city\u2019s roads in testing late summer heat, accompanied by the warmth of a distinctly Southern welcome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia\u2019s 11-strong squad arrived with considerable momentum following a history-making 2025 campaign that yielded nine gold medals and the nation\u2019s first mixed team relay medal, a silver.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day One\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) Para athlete Lauren Parker set the tone on day one with a commanding victory in the women\u2019s H3 time trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few athletes can lay claim to the sporting range Parker has displayed in 2026 alone. Her year has stretched from a Winter Paralympic debut in Para biathlon and Para cross-country skiing, to victories on the international Para triathlon circuit and now, another rainbow jersey in Para cycling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back on the handcycle, Parker covered the undulating 14.6-kilometre course in 23:03.62, averaging 37.99 km\/h and finishing 33.37 seconds clear of her nearest rival to be crowned world champion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alexander Welsh finished ninth in the men\u2019s H3 time trial, while Grant Allen placed 10th in the men\u2019s H4.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-09-at-10.13.45-am-715x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9923905\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.6982421875;width:715px;height:auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day Two\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia\u2019s medal haul gathered pace on day two, spearheaded by Tahlia Clayton-Goodie\u2019s commanding performance in the women\u2019s C1 time trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clayton-Goodie stopped the clock at 22:47.22, averaging 38.44 km\/h and putting more than a minute between herself and her nearest rival to claim the rainbow jersey.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alana Forster added silver in the women\u2019s C5 and Tara Neyland silver in the women\u2019s C4, while Emily Petricola took bronze in the women\u2019s C3, finishing just four seconds shy of gold.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meg Lemon placed fifth in the women\u2019s C4, while Emma Mickle finished eighth in the women\u2019s C3, Alistair Donohoe eighth in the men\u2019s C5 and Darren Hicks ninth in the men\u2019s C2.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day Three\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parker returned to the podium on day three, adding bronze in the women\u2019s H3 road race after 55.2 kilometres of racing and a dramatic sprint to the line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of a three-rider breakaway, Parker battled all the way to the finish as the trio went head-to-head for the podium, with the final placings decided by a thrilling photo finish.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allen finished 10th in the men\u2019s H4 road race, while Welsh placed 13th in the men\u2019s H3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day Four\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final day brought another burst of Australian success, beginning with Neyland\u2019s silver in the women\u2019s C4 road race. Neyland was locked in a sprint for the rainbow jersey with American Samantha Bosco, with the pair separated by a split second in another photo finish.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the women\u2019s C5, Alana Forster added bronze after a three-way sprint to the line, while Clayton-Goodie completed another highly successful World Championships campaign with silver in the women\u2019s C1 road race, adding to her time trial gold.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were strong performances across the remaining classes, with Alistair Donohoe finishing fourth in the men\u2019s C5 road race, Darren Hicks fifth in the men\u2019s C2, Lemon seventh in the women\u2019s C4, Petricola seventh in the women\u2019s C3 and Mickle ninth in the women\u2019s C3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final contest delivered another podium for Australia, with Parker, Welsh and Allen combining for bronze in the mixed H1 \u2013 H5 team relay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia held third through much of the closing stages, before the USA surged on the final lap to move into silver, leaving the Australians to settle for bronze behind France.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was nevertheless another significant result for Parker, Welsh and Allen, who had combined to win silver in the relay at last year\u2019s World Championships.
