Australian cricket\u2019s push to bring private money into the Big Bash has met fierce resistance from New South Wales, which warns that sharing profits with outside investors could drain funds from grassroots cricket.<\/p>\n
Cricket Australia (CA) has approved a \u201cself-determination\u201d model, allowing individual states to decide whether to seek private investment in their Big Bash clubs. The Melbourne Renegades are set to become the first club sold under the arrangement.<\/p>\n
But Cricket NSW, which operates the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder, has opposed privatisation and maintained that neither club would pursue it. Its central objection: money flowing to external investors would leave less to reinvest in the game. \u201cThe redistribution of profits to external investors reduces our ability to invest in community cricket, creating long-term impacts at all levels,\u201d Cricket NSW said in a statement.<\/p>\n
NSW has challenged both the financial case for privatisation and the process behind CA\u2019s decision. It says the move went ahead without agreement across Australian cricket, despite concerns raised by the state and an alternative proposal to strengthen the Big Bash. \u201cThis decision risks leaving cricket in NSW and Australia strategically and financially worse off, with direct consequences for our ability to invest in grassroots cricket,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
NSW described the existing Australian cricket system as \u201cthe envy of the world\u201d, warning that the announcement \u201cthreatens this system\u201d.<\/p>\n
It also questioned CA\u2019s financial projections and said its assessment of the proposal\u2019s risks was informed by external advice. The state maintains that the Sixers and Thunder are \u201csuccessful and healthy\u201d clubs whose profits help expand participation. Its opposition to private ownership, it stressed, does not diminish its belief in the growth potential of the BBL and Women\u2019s Big Bash League (WBBL).<\/p>\n
According to NSW, four conditions agreed upon by all state chairs in June for any sale process have yet to be fulfilled. These include an agreement with the Australian Cricketers\u2019 Association (ACA). The players\u2019 body said on Tuesday that CA\u2019s announcement did not clear the way for privatisation to proceed without an agreement on a new player payment model. That leaves player payments as a key unresolved issue as CA prepares to seek private investment.<\/p>\n
CA will invite bids for a 100 per cent stake in the Renegades, targeting a sale that would put new ownership in charge for the 2027\u201328 BBL and WBBL seasons. The upcoming season will remain unaffected. CA will run the Renegades in a caretaker capacity during the 2026\u201327 campaigns, and the club will retain its existing identity.
